Three new movies are opening in theaters nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the sci-fi drama Ad Astra directed by James Gray and starring Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler and Donald Sutherland. The film’s original music is composed by Max Richter (The Leftovers, Mary Queen of Scots, Hostiles, Waltz with Bashir). Deutsche Grammophon has released a digital single featuring a track of the composer’s score (click here for more details). Lorne Balfe (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, The Lego Batman Movie) is credited as additional music composer (click here to listen to a track from Balfe’s score).
Also opening wide is the action movie Rambo: Last Blood directed by Adrian Grunberg and starring Sylvester Stallone, Paz Vega, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Adrianna Barraza, Yvette Monreal, Genie Kim, Joaquin Cosio and Oscar Jaenada. Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Fast & Furious, Crazy Rich Asians) who has previously scored 2008’s Rambo has composed the film’s original music. Expected to top the weekend box office is the film adaptation of Downton Abbey directed by Michael Engler, written by Julian Fellowes and starring Hugh Bonneville, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt, Matthew Goode, Elizabeth McGovern, Tuppence Middleton, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunto and Penelope Wilton. The film’s original music is composed by John Lunn (Grantchester, Jamestown, Shetland, The Last Kingdom) who previously scored all episodes of the Downton Abbey TV series. Opening in limited release is the documentary Where’s My Roy Cohn? directed by Matt Tyrnauer about Rob Cohn, the American lawyer best known for being Senator Joseph McCarthy’s chief counsel during the Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954. Lorne Balfe who has previously scored the director’s last feature Studio 54 has composed the film’s original music. Also opening in limited release is the romantic comedy The Wedding Year directed by Robert Luketic and starring Sarah Hyland, Tyler James Williams, Anna Camp, Jenna Dewan, Keith David, Noureen DeWulf, Wanda Sykes and Darlene Vogel. The film’s original score is composed by Raney Shockne (Queen of the South, Kevin Can Wait, Anger Management, The To Do List). Also opening in select theaters is the thriller American Dreamer co-written and directed by Derrick Borte and starring Jim Gaffigan, Robbie Jones, Isabel Arizza and Tammy Blanchard. Bryan Senti (Lowriders, Experimenter, London Town, Save Me) has composed the film’s original music. Phantom Limb has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last month. Opening exclusively in select Regal theaters is the thriller Villains written and directed by Dan Berk & Robert Olsen and starring Bill Skarsgård, Maika Monroe, Blake Baumgartner, Jeffrey Donovan and Kyra Sedgwick. The film’s original music is composed by Andrew Hewitt (The Double, Submarine, The Stanford Prison Experiment). No word on a soundtrack release. Also opening in select cities is the thriller Running with the Devil written and directed by Jason Cabell and starring Nicolas Cage, Laurence Fishburne, Barry Pepper, Adam Goldberg, Leslie Bibb, Clifton Collins Jr., Peter Facinelli, Christian Tappan, Natalia Reyes and Cole Hauser. The film’s original music is composed by Reinhold Heil (Cloud Atlas, The International, Run Lola Run, One Hour Photo). No soundtrack album has been announced. The thriller is being released by Quiver Distribution.
Another limited release this week is the horror thriller Bloodline co-written and directed by Henry Jacobson and starring Seann William Scott, Mariela Garriga, Dale Dickey and Kevin Carroll. Trevor Gureckis (The Goldfinch) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in limited release is the comedy Corporate Animals directed by Patrick Brice and starring Demi Moore, Jessica Williams, Ed Helms, Karan Soni, Calum Worthy and Nasim Pedrad. The film’s original music is composed by Michael Yezerski (Blindspotting, Mr. Inbetween, The Devil’s Candy, Mental, The Little Death). Opening in select theaters before premiering on HBO next Tuesday is the documentary Diego Maradona directed by Asif Kapadia about the celebrated football player who played for S.S.C. Napoli in the 1980s. Antonio Pinto (City of God, Lord of War, McFarland, USA, Snitch, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind) has composed the film’s original music.
