Three new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Already playing in theaters since this past Wednesday is the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Constance Wu, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding and Chris Pang. The film’s original score is composed by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Fast & Furious series). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score (click here for the full album details), as well as a separate album featuring the songs from the movie (click here for more information).
Opening nationwide today is the action thriller Mile 22 directed by Peter Berg and starring Mark Wahlberg, Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais, Ronda Rousey and John Malkovich. Jeff Russo (Fargo, Star Trek: Discovery, Legion, The Night Of) has composed the film’s original score. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Also opening wide today is the action adventure Alpha directed by Albert Hughes and starring Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jóhannes Haukur Johannesson. The film’s original music is composed by Michael Stearns (Samsara, One Eight Seven) and Joseph S. DeBeasi (American Sniper) has provided additional music. No word on a soundtrack release. Opening in limited release is the comedy drama Juliet, Naked directed by Jesse Peretz and starring Rose Byrne, Ethan Hawke and Chris O’Dowd. Nathan Larson (Boys Don’t Cry, Dirty Pretty Things, The Skeleton Twins, (Our) Idiot Brother) has composed the film’s original score. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring Larson’s music, as well as original songs written by Ryan Adams, Conor Oberst, Robyn Hitchcock and Larson. Also opening in limited release is the drama The Wife directed by Björn Runge and starring Glenn Close, Jonathan Pryce, Christian Slater, Max Irons, Harry Lloyd, Annie Starke and Elizabeth McGovern. The film’s original music is composed by Jocelyn Pook (Eyes Wide Shut, The Merchant of Venice, Brick Lane). No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Opening in Austin before expanding to more markets over the next couple of weeks is the biographical drama Blaze directed by Ethan Hawke and starring Ben Dickey, Alia Shawkat, Josh Hamilton and Charlie Sexton. The film doesn’t feature an original score. Light in the Attic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring new recordings of classic Blaze Foley compositions, as well as songs performed by Alynda Segarra of Hurray for the the Riff Raff and Dickey & Shawkat. Opening in select AMC theaters is the fantasy drama The Little Mermaid directed by Blake Harris & Chris Bouchard and starring Poppy Drayton, William Moseley, Armando Gutierrez, Loreto Peralta and Shirley MacLaine. The film’s original music is composed and conducted by Jeremy Rubolino (Walt Before Mickey). Also opening in select cities and on VOD is the supernatural drama Down a Dark Hall directed by Rodrigo Cortés and starring AnnaSophia Robb, Isabelle Fuhrman, Victoria Moroles, Noah Silver, Taylor Russell, Rosie Day and Uma Thurman. Victor Reyes (Buried, Grand Piano, The Night Manager, Red Lights) has composed the film’s original score. A soundtrack album is in the works and will be announced soon. Another limited release this week is the crime drama Billionaire Boys Club directed by James Cox and starring Ansel Elgort, Taron Egerton, Kevin Spacey, Emma Roberts, Suki Waterhouse, Bokeem Woodbine, Billie Lourd, Jeremy Irvine and Judd Nelson. The film’s original score is composed by Edward Shearmur (Charlie’s Angels, Johnny English, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows a group of wealthy boys in Los Angeles during the early 1980s, is being released by Vertical Entertainment and is now also available on VOD.
Also opening in select theaters is the animated feature Luis and the Aliens written and directed by Wolfgang Lauenstein & Christoph Lauenstein and featuring the voices of Will Forte, Lea Thompson, Orlando Leyba, Joey Guila and Callum Maloney. Martin Lingnau & Ingmar Süberkrüb have composed the film’s original score. Cinetunes has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score earlier this year when the movie opened overseas. Also opening in limited release is the drama We the Animals co-written and directed by Jeremiah Zagar and starring Evan Rosado, Isaiah Kristian, Josiah Gabriel, Sheila Vand and Raul Castillo. The film’s original music is composed by Nick Zammuto. No soundtrack album has been released. The movie The drama, which focuses on three boys growing up in rural New York, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by The Orchard. Also opening in select theaters while also premiering on Hulu today is the documentary Minding the Gap directed by Bing Liu and produced by Steve James. Nathan Halpern (The Rider, Rich Hill, One Percent More Humid) and Chris Ruggiero have composed the film’s original music.
