Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend is the horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein directed by Zelda Williams and starring Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Carla Gugino, Joe Chrest, Liza Soberano and Henry Eikenberry. The film’s original score is composed by Isabella Summers (Little Fires Everywhere, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, The Offer, Call Jane, Sex/Life). Opening semi-wide in around 550 theaters is the British horror thriller Out of Darkness directed by Andrew Cumming and starring Chuku Modu, Safia Oakley-Green, Iola Evans, Kit Young, Luna Mwezi and Arno Lüning. Adam Janota Bzowski (Saint Maud, Black Mirror: Loch Henry, The Marsh King’s Daughter, Here Before) has composed the film’s original music. Madison Gate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Opening in select theaters is the Japanese/German drama Perfect Days co-written and directed by Wim Wenders and starring Kôji Yakusho, Min Tanaka, Tokio Emoto, Sayuri Ishikawa, Aoi Yamada, Yumi Aso, Arisa Nakano and Tomokazu Miura. The movie doesn’t feature an original score. Singer/songwriter Patrick Watson has recorded a cover of Lou Reed’s Perfect Day for the project. No word on a soundtrack release. The film, which revolves around a janitor in Japan and drives between jobs listening to rock music, premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and has been nominated in the International Feature category at this year’s Academy Awards. The drama is being distributed in the U.S. by Neon.

Also opening in select U.S. theaters is the French drama The Taste of Things (La passion de Dodin Bouffant) co-written and directed by Tran Anh Hung and starring Juliette Binoche, Benoît Magimel, Jan Hammenecker and Pierre Gagnaire. The movie also doesn’t feature an original score and no soundtrack album is expected. The movie, which is set in France in 1889 and follows the story of a chef living with his personal cook and lover, premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and has been selected as French’s entry and shortlisted in the International Feature category for this year’s Academy Awards. The film is being distributed stateside by IFC Films.

Opening in New York today before expanding to more U.S. markets over the next couple of weeks is the documentary Ennio directed by Giuseppe Tornatore about late composer Ennio Morricone (1928-2020). The movie examines the breadth of the maestro’s career, from his early Italian pop songs to his unforgettable film scores that he wrote, including The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Days of Heaven, The Mission, The Thing, Once Upon in America, The Untouchables, among others. The movie, which features commentary from Morricone’s collaborators and contemporaries, premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival and is being distributed in the U.S. by Music Box Films.

Also opening in select theaters is the drama Drift directed by Anthony Chen and starring Cynthia Erivo, Alia Shawkat, Honor Swinton Byrne, Ibrahima Ba, Zainab Jah and Suzy Bemba. Ré Olunuga (Rise, GirlUp North, Iwájú, Coming from Insanity) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which centers on a a young refugee who lands alone and penniless on a Greek island where she tries to survive and begins a friendship with a rootless tour guide, premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released in the U.S. by Utopia.

Opening in select theaters and on VOD is the drama Lola directed by Nicola Peltz Beckham and starring Peltz Beckham herself, Raven Goodwin, Richie Merritt, Trevor Long, Luke David Blumm and Virginia Madsen. The film’s original score is composed by Mervyn Warren (The Wedding Planner, Joyful Noise, A Walk to RememberHoney). Quincy Jones serve as the project’s executive music producer. Also opening in select theaters and on VOD today is the romantic drama Float co-written and directed by Sherren Lee and starring Andrea Bang, Robbie Amell, Michelle Krusiec, Rukiya Bernard, Andrew Bachelor and Sarah Desjardins. Dan Mangan (Hilda, Unspeakable) & Jesse Zubot (Hector and the Search for Happiness, Ever Deadly) have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released. The movie, which is based on the novel by Kate Marchant and follows a young woman who unexpectedly falls for the small-town lifeguard who rescued her, is being distributed by Lionsgate.

Another limited release this weekend is the sci-fi romantic comedy Molli and Max in the Future written and directed by Michael Lukk Litwak and starring Zosia Mamet, Aristotle Athari, Arturo Castro, Okieriete Onaodowan, Danny Burstein, Erin Darke, Grace Kuhlenschmidt and Michael Chernus. The film’s original music is composed by Alex Winkler (DawningThe Girl Who Left Home). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score was released last week.
