Premiering tonight is the HBO docu-series The Vow directed and executive produced by Jehane Noujaim & Karim Amer about the self-improvement group NXIVM, whose leaders have been charged with sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. The show’s original music is composed by Mac Quayle (Mr. Robot, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Feud: Bette and Joan, Pose, Scream Queens, The Politician). Premiering on Wednesday, August 26 is the Netflix documentary Rising Phoenix directed by Ian Bonhote & Peter Ettedgui about the Paralympic Games and its evolution from the rubble of World War II to the third biggest sporting event on the planet. Daniel Pemberton (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Steve Jobs, Birds of Prey, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword). 1812 Recordings will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score on Wednesday (click here for the full album details) and the original title song by Pemberton, Georgetragic, Toni Hickman & Keith Jones is already available as a digital single now (click here to listen to the track).
Premiering on Thursday, August 27 in the U.S. is the British series Pure written by Kirstie Swain based on the book of the same name by Rose Cartwright and starring Charly Clive, Joe Cole, Kiran Sonia Sawar, Niamh Algar, Anthony Welsh and Doon Mackichan. The show’s original music is composed by singer/songwriter Julia Holter (Bleed for This, Never Rarely Sometimes Always). The comedy drama follows a 24-year-old woman at her breaking point and stifled by her tiny Scottish hometown who impulsively moves to London, where she finds a gang of new friends. The series premiere in the UK last year on Channel 4 and will make its U.S. debut on HBO Max.
Premiering on Friday, August 28 is the Netflix original film All Together Now directed by Brett Haley and starring Auli’i Cravalho, Fred Armisen, Carol Burnett, Justina Machado, Rhenzy Feliz, Judy Reyes, Anthony Jacques Jr., Taylor Richardson, C.S. Lee and Gerald Isaac Waters. Keegan DeWitt (Hearts Beat Loud, Gemini, Divorce, I’ll See In My Dreams, All the Bright Places, The Hero) has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as a song written by DeWitt and performed by Cravalho on Friday. Also premiering on Friday is the Disney+ original film Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe written by Dan Povenmire & Jeff Marsh, directed by Bob Bowen and starring Ashley Tisdale, Vincent Martella, Caroline Rhea, Alyson Stoner, Maulik Pancholy, Dee Bradley Baker, Bobby Gaylor, Ali Wong and Thomas Middleditch. The film’s original music is composed by Phineas and Ferb series composer Danny Jacob who also produced the songs for the movie. Walt Disney Records has already released two songs and will release a full soundtrack album on Friday. Also premiering on Friday is the Hulu original film The Binge directed by Jeremy Garelick and starring Skyler Gisondo, Eduardo Franco, Dexter Darden, Vince Vaughn, Hayes MacArthur, Affion Crockett and Grace Van Dien. Matt Bowen (Best. Worst. Weekend. Ever) has composed the original score for the film, which also features an original song written by Bowen & Christopher Lennertz. Missing from last week’s TV music roundup was the Netflix original series Hoops created by Ben Hoffman and starring Jake Johnson, Ron Funches, Cleo King, Natasha Leggero, A.D. Miles and Rob Riggle. The show’s original score is composed by Sam Hoffman who also co-wrote the project’s main and end title theme with the creator. The animated comedy, which centers on a foul-mouthed high school basketball coach who is sure he’ll hit the big leagues if he can only turn his terrible team around, premiered this past Friday, August 21 and is now available to stream on Netflix.
Also missing from last week’s TV music roundup was the Netflix original film The Sleepover directed by Trish Sie and starring Sadie Stanley, Maxwell Simkins, Ken Marino, Malin Åkerman and Joe Manganiello. Germaine Franco (Tag, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Dope, Vida, Little) has composed the film’s original score. Scott Caldwell. The show’s original score is composed by Amanda Jones (Home, Twenties, Cherish the Day). Hollywood Records has released the original song 6ft from Love performed by Qualley (as Rainsford) earlier this week.
