Three new movies are opening in theaters nationwide:
Opening in most theaters is Marvel Studios’ Black Panther directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke and Andy Serkis. Ludwig Goransson (Creed, Community, Fruitvale Station) has composed the film’s original score. Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide is the animated feature Early Man directed by Nick Park and featuring the voices of Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston, Maisie Williams, Timothy Spall and Richard Ayoade. Harry Gregson-Williams (The Chronicles of Narnia, The Martian, Shrek) & Tom Howe (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women) have composed the film’s original score. Mercury Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score, as well as new songs by New Hope Club and The Vamps and a track by Kaiser Chiefs. Also opening wide is the biblical drama Samson directed by Bruce Macdonald and starring Jackson Rathbone, Billy Zane, Taylor James, Rutger Hauer, Caitlin Leahy, Lindsay Wagner, Frances Sholto-Douglas and Greg Kriek. The film’s original score is composed by Will Musser (God’s Not Dead, A Case for Christ). Dream Records has released a soundtrack album featuring songs and and inspired by the film by artists including Emmanuel Church, Seacoast Worship, Cindy Cruse Ratcliff & more. Opening in limited release is the drama Nostalgia directed by Mark Pellington and starring Jon Hamm, Catherine Keener, John Ortiz, Nick Offerman, Chris Marquette, James Le Gros, Bruce Dern, Ellen Burstyn, Amber Tamblyn and Patton Oswalt. Laurent Eyquem (Copperhead, Winnie Mandela, Rage, USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage) has composed the film’s original music. Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in select U.S. theaters is the Russian drama Loveless directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev and starring Maryana Spivak, Alexey Rozin, Matvey Novikov, Marina Vasilyeva, Andris Keishs and Alexey Fateev. The film’s original music is composed by Evgueni Galperine and Sacha Galperine (The Family, The Wizard of Lies, The Past, Nine Lives). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score last fall when the movie started its international run. Also opening in limited release is the British comedy The Party written and directed by Sally Potter and starring Patricia Clarkson, Bruno Ganz, Cherry Jones, Emily Mortimer, Cillian Murphy, Kristin Scott Thomas and Timothy Spall. The movie doesn’t feature an original score. Matt Biffa & Ciara Elwis serve as the project’s music supervisors. The film follows a movie who throws a party to celebrate her new promotion, but once the guests arrive it becomes clear that not everything is going to go down as smoothly as the red wine. The comedy premiered at last year’s Berlin Film Festival and is being released by Roadside Attractions. Visit the official movie website for more information.
Also opening in select cities is the thriller The Scent of Rain & Lightning directed by Blake Robbins and starring Maika Monroe, Mark Webber, Will Patton, Bonnie Bedelia, Justin Chatwin, Aaron Poole, Brad Carter, Logan Miller and Maggie Grace. Will Blair & Brooke Blair (Green Room, Blue Ruins, I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore) have composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows a Midwestern twenty-something whose past resurfaces when the man convicted of killing her parents has his sentence pardoned, was shown at various film festivals last year and is being released in theaters and on VOD by SP Releasing. Also opening in select cities is the indie comedy drama The Boy Downstairs written and directed by Sophie Brooks and starring Zosia Mamet, Matthew Shear, Deirdre O’Connell, Sarah Ramos and Diana Irvine. The film’s original music is composed by David Buckley (The Good Wife, The Forbidden Kingdom, Jason Bourne, The Nice Guys, Papillon). No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie, which follows a young woman who is forced to reflect on her first relationship when she inadvertently moves into her ex-boyfriend’s apartment building, premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released by FilmRise.
Already playing in select U.S. theaters since this past Wednesday is the French thriller Double Lover (L’amant double) written and directed by Francois Ozon and starring Jérémie Renier, Marine Vacth and Jacqueline Bisset. Philippe Rombi (Swimming Pool, Frantz, In the House, Potiche, Young & Beautiful, Angel) has composed the film’s original music. Quartet Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last year when the movie opened overseas. Also opening in limited release is the Chinese fantasy action adventure Monster Hunt 2 directed by Raman Hui and starring Tony Leung, Bai Baihe, Jing Boran, Li Yuchun and Tony Yang. The film’s original music is composed by Leon Ko (The Warlords, Perhaps Love) who also scored the 2015 original Monster Hunt movie. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Also opening in select theaters is the Chinese fantasy action adventure sequel The Monkey King 3 directed by Soi Cheang and starring Aaron Kwok, William Feng, Zanilia Zhao, Xiaoshenyang and Him Law. Yu Kobayashi has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack release is expected.
