Five new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Already playing in theaters since Wednesday is the action adventure comedy Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle directed by Jake Kasdan and starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas and Bobby Cannavale. The film’s original music is composed by Henry Jackman (Captain America: The Winter Soldier & Civil War, Big Hero 6, Kong: Skull Island, Wreck-It-Ralph, X-Men: First Class). Also now playing is the movie musical The Greatest Showman directed by Michael Gracey and starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya. Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen) have written the film’s original songs and John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, The Jungle Book) & Joseph Trapanese (Oblivion, Straight Outta Compton) have composed the movie’s original score. Opening nationwide today is the social satire Downsizing co-written and directed by Alexander Payne and starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau and Kristen Wiig. The film’s original music is composed by Rolfe Kent (Sideways, Election, About Schmidt, Wedding Crashers, Up in the Air, Legally Blonde). Also opening today is the sequel Pitch Perfect 3 directed by Trish Sie and starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Hana Mae Lee, Alexis Knapp, Ester Dean, Ruby Rose, John Michael Higgins, John Lithgow and Elizabeth Banks. Christopher Lennertz (Horrible Bosses, Ride Along) has composed the film’s original score. The final wide release of the week is the comedy Father Figures directed by Lawrence Sher and starring Owen Wilson, Ed Helms, J.K. Simmons, Katt Williams, Terry Bradshaw, Ving Rhames, Harry Shearer, June Squibb, Christopher Walken and Glenn Close. The film’s original score is composed by Rob Simonsen (Foxcatcher, (500) Days of Summer, Nerve, The Spectacular Now). Opening in select theaters before expanding nationwide on January 12 is the drama The Post directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Alison Brie, Carrie Coon, Sarah Paulson, Jesse Plemons, Matthew Rhys, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bradley Whitford and Zach Woods. Also opening in select theaters before expanding nationwide next month is the western Hostiles directed by Scott Cooper and starring Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Wes Studi, Jesse Plemons, Adam Beach, Rory Cochrane, Peter Mullan, Scott Wilson, Timothée Chalamet, Ben Foster and Q’orianka Kilcher. The film’s original score is composed by Max Richter (The Leftovers, Taboo, Waltz with Bashir, Miss Sloane). Also opening in limited release is the thriller Crooked House directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner and starring Glenn Close, Terence Stamp, Max Irons, Stefanie Martini, Gillian Anderson and Christina Hendricks. Another limited release this week is the crime thriller Hangman directed by Johnny Martin and stars Al Pacino, Karl Urban and Brittany Snow. The film’s original music is composed by Frederik Wiedmann (Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Field of Lost Shoes, Beware the Batman, Vengeance: A Love Story).
