In addition to the nationwide expansion of Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, three other new movies are opening across the country this week:
Opening in around 3300 theaters is the family movie Paddington written and directed by Paul King and starring Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Nicole Kidman, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi and Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington. The film’s original music is composed by Nick Urata (Crazy, Stupid, Love, Focus). Decca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the score, as well as songs from the film by James Brown, Steppenwolf and Lionel Richie. Opening in roughly 3000 theaters is the comedy The Wedding Ringer directed by Jeremy Garelick and starring Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, Ken Howard, Cloris Leachman, Jenifer Lewis, Mimi Rogers and Olivia Thirlby. Christopher Lennertz (Ride Along, Agent Carter, Identity Thief) has composed the film’s original score. Madison Gate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by such artists as The Black Eyed Peas, Boyz II Men, Otis Redding, Todd Rundgren, Hal Jeffrin and Rancid earlier this week. Also opening wide is the thriller Blackhat co-written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Tang Wei and Wang Leehom. The film’s original music is credited to Harry Gregson-Williams (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia), Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Gone Girl) and Leopold Ross (The Book of Eli). Ryan Amon (Elysium) has written additional music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Blackhat follows a furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta. Opening semi-wide in around 400 theaters is the family drama Spare Parts directed by Sean McNamara and starring Jamie Lee Curtis, George Lopez, Marisa Tomei, Carlos Pena and Alexa PenaVega. Andrés Levin (Borderland, Feel the Noise) has composed the film’s original music. J-2 Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by such artists as Ozomatli, Yerba Buena, Mateo Stevens, Cucu Diamantes & Los Hanky Pankys. Opening in limited release is the indie drama Still Alice directed by Richard Glatzer & Wash Westmoreland and starring Julianne Moore, Kristen Stewart, Alec Baldwin, Kate Bosworth and Hunter Parrish. The film’s original music is composed by Ilan Eshkeri (Layer Cake, The Invisible Woman, Stardust). Nettwerk has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as cover of Lyle Lovett’s If I Had A Boat by Karen Elson earlier this week. Another limited release this week is the Australian thriller Son of a Gun directed by Julius Avery and starring Ewan McGregor, Alicia Vikander and Brenton Thwaites. The film’s original music is composed by Jed Kurzel (The Snowtown Murders, The Babadook, Macbeth). Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Also opening in select theaters is the drama Little Accidents written and directed by Sara Colangelo and starring Elizabeth Banks, Boyd Holbrook, Chloe Sevingy, Jacob Lofland and Josh Lucas. Marcelo Zarvos (Enough Said, The Affair, Ray Donovan, The Good Shepherd) has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Little Accidents is set small American coal-mining town left devastated by a mining accident that killed 12 men and follows the lives of three very different inhabitants and follows the lone survivor, a mourning mother and 14 year-old boy who become inexplicably tangled in a web of secrets. The drama premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and was picked up for domestic distribution by Amplify. For updates on the film, visit the official movie website.
Also opening in limited release is the comedy drama Match written and directed by Stephen Belber and starring Patrick Stewart, Carla Gugino and Matthew Lillard. The film’s original score is composed by Stephen Trask (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, In Good Company, Little Fockers). Match follows a Seattle couple who travels to New York to interview a former dancer for research for a dissertation about the city’s dance landscape in the 1960s. Another limited release this weekend is the sci-fi thriller Vice directed by Brian A. Miller and starring Thomas Jane, Bruce Willis, Ambyr Childers, Johnathon Schaech, Bryan Greenberg, Charlotte Kirk and Tyler J. Olson. The film’s original music is composed by the British electronic music group Hybrid (Dead in Tombstones, Catacombs). Vice is set in a city in which humans can enact their most perverse fantasies onto androids and follows an android who becomes self-aware and breaks out, only to become intent on shutting down the organization. No word on a soundtrack release. The thriller is being released both in theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate.
