Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the action comedy Pain & Gain directed by Michael Bay and starring Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Anthony Mackie, Bar Paly, Tony Shalhoub, Rebel Wilson and Ken Jeong. The film’s original score is composed by Steve Jablonsky (Transformers series, Gangster Squad). Varese Sarabande has announced a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Also opening wide is the ensemble romantic comedy The Big Wedding written and directed by Justin Zackham and starring Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams, Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried and Topher Grace. Nathan Barr (Hostel, True Blood) has composed the film’s original score. The composer has also co-written the original song It’s a Wonderful Life with Lisbeth Scott for the project. No soundtrack album has been announced at this point. The movie centers on a modern family trying to survive a weekend wedding celebration that has the potential to become a full blown family fiasco. Opening in over 300 theaters is the indie drama Mud written and directed by Jeff Nichols and starring Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Sam Shepard and Reese Witherspoon. David Wingo (All the Real Girls, The Sitter) who previously collaborated with the director on 2011′s Take Shelter has composed the film’s original score. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as tracks by Jeff McIlwain, the country-punk rock band Lucero and its frontman Ben Nichols and Dirty Three. Also opening in select cities is the indie romantic comedy Arthur Newman directed by Dante Ariola and starring Colin Firth, Emily Blunt and Anne Heche. The film’s origjnal score is composed by Nick Urata (Ruby Sparks, Crazy Stupid Love). No soundtrack album has been announced yet. The film about a man who stages his own death and buys himself a new identity as golf pro “Arthur Newman” premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and has been picked up by Cinedigm for domestic distribution. Also opening in limited release is the indie drama At Any Price directed by Ramin Bahrani and starring Dennis Quaid, Zac Efron, Kim Dickens, Heather Graham, Clancy Brown, Celcie Ross, Maika Monroe, Red West, Ben Marten and Dan Waller. Dickon Hinchliffe (Winter’s Bone, Last Chance Harvey) has composed the film’s original score. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Another limited release this week is the Norwegian epic drama Kon-Tiki directed by Espen Sandberg & Joachim Rønning and starring Pål Sverre Hagen, Agnes Kittelsen, Odd-Magnus Williamson, Tobias Santelmann, Donald Baasmo Christiansen, James Oftebro, Gustaf Skarsgård and Søren Pilmark. Johan Söderqvist (After the Wedding, Let the Right One In) has composed the film’s music. Sony Classical has released the composer’s music earlier this week. Also opening in select cities is the thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist directed by Mira Nair and starring Riz Ahmed, Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber and Kiefer Sutherland. The film’s original score is composed by Michael Andrews (Donnie Darko, Bridesmaids, Bad Teacher). No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie about a young Pakistani working on Wall Street and chasing the American dream, whose life is fateful changed by the September 11 attacks premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and has been picked up by IFC Films for U.S. distribution. Also being released in select theaters is the thriller The Numbers Station directed by Kasper Barfoed and starring John Cusack, Malin Akerman and Liam Cunningham. Paul Leonard-Morgan (Limitless, Dredd) has composed the film’s original score. No word yet on a soundtrack release. The thriller about a disgraced black-ops agent who is tasked with a job of protecting a code operator for an isolated covert CIA broadcast station is being released by Image Entertainment and is also available on VOD.
