Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the action comedy Pain & Gain directed by Michael Bay and starring Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Anthony Mackie, Bar Paly, Tony Shalhoub, Rebel Wilson and Ken Jeong. The film’s original score is composed by Steve Jablonsky (Transformers series, Gangster Squad). Varese Sarabande has announced a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Also opening wide is the ensemble romantic comedy The Big Wedding written and directed by Justin Zackham and starring Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams, Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried and Topher Grace. Nathan Barr (Hostel, True Blood) has composed the film’s original score. The composer has also co-written the original song It’s a Wonderful Life with Lisbeth Scott for the project. No soundtrack album has been announced at this point. The movie centers on a modern family trying to survive a weekend wedding celebration that has the potential to become a full blown family fiasco. ‘Kon-Tiki’ Soundtrack Details

Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album for the Norwegian epic drama Kon-Tiki. The album features the film’s original score composed by Johan Söderqvist (Let the Right One In) who recorded his score at Abbey Road Studios in London. The soundtrack will be released digitally on April 26, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips after the jump. Kon-Tiki is directed by Espen Sandberg & Joachim Rønning and tells the story of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl’s voyage on a balsa-wood raft across the Pacific Ocean in 1947. The movie stars Pål Sverre Hagen, Agnes Kittelsen, Odd-Magnus Williamson, Tobias Santelmann, Donald Baasmo Christiansen, James Oftebro, Gustaf Skarsgård and Søren Pilmark. The movie was one of the five nominated titles in the “Best Foreign Language Film” category at this year’s Academy Awards.

Johan Söderqvist to Score Susanne Bier’s ‘Serena’

Composer Johan Söderqvist is reuniting with director Susanne Bier on the upcoming drama Serena. The film is set in 1920s North Carolina and stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper as two newlyweds who battle the state government to stop it requisitioning their land as part of a national park. Toby Jones, Rhys Ifans and Sean Harris are co-starring. Christopher Kyle (K-19: The Widowmaker, Alexander) has written the screenplay based on a novel by Ron Rash. Nick Wechsler (Magic Mike, The Road), Todd Wagner & Mark Cuban (Deadfall), Ben Cosgrove (The Good German), Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz (Killing Them Softly, The Road) are producing the 2929 Entertainment production.

Johan Söderqvist Scoring ‘Kon-Tiki’

Johan Söderqvist will be recording his orchestral score for the epic drama Kon-Tiki this weekend at Abbey Road Studios in London. The film directed by Espen Sandberg & Joachim Rønning (Bandidas, Max Manus) marks Norway’s most expensive feature film to date and tells the story of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl’s voyage on a balsa-wood raft across the Pacific Ocean in 1947. Heyerdahl and his crew traveled across open sea to prove his scientific theory that the Polynesian people originally came from Peru in South America. The film’s cast includes Pål Sverre Hagen, Agnes Kittelsen, Odd-Magnus Williamson, Tobias Santelmann, Donald Baasmo Christiansen, James Oftebro and Gustaf Skarsgård and Søren Pilmark. Jeremy Thomas (The Last Emperor, A Dangerous Method, Sexy Beast) and Aage Aaberge (Strings) are producing the Nordisk Film Production project.
