Music Highlights from 95th Academy Awards

The 95th Academy Awards ceremony was held last night. All five nominees in the Original Song category were performed live. Shogun Music has released the first soundtrack album for the BBC natural history series Wild Isles. The album features the original music from the show’s first episode, Our Precious Isles, composed by Academy Award nominee George Fenton (Dangerous Liaisons, Anna and the King, The Blue Planet, Groundhog Day, Hitch, Ever After, Gandhi). The soundtrack is now available to stream/download on Amazon and any other major digital music services. Listen to the first track after the jump. More albums featuring the composer’s score from the other four episodes of the series are expected to come out over the next couple of weeks. Volker Bertelmann was honored with his first Academy Award for his score for Edward Berger’s Netflix World War I drama All Quiet on the Western Front at tonight’s 95th Oscar ceremony. Bertelmann who also won his first BAFTA Award last month for his work on the movie has previously been Oscar-nominated for 2016’s Lion (co-scored with Dustin O’Halloran). Premiering in the U.S. tonight is the British limited series A Spy Among Friends created by Alexander Cary based on Ben Macintyre’s bestselling book and starring Damian Lewis, Guy Pearce, Stephen Kunken, Anna Maxwell Martin, and Adrian Edmondson. The show’s original music is composed by Dustin O’Halloran (Lion, Like Crazy, Transparent, The Old Guard, AmmoniteThe Essex Serpent). Premiering on Friday, March 17, is the Hulu original movie Boston Strangler written and directed by Matt Ruskin and starring Keira Knightley, Carrie Coon, Alessandro Nivola, David Dastmalchian, Morgan Spector, Robert John Burke and Chris Cooper. Capitol Records has released the first song from the soundtrack for the upcoming Paramount+ original series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies. Available to stream/download now on all major digital music services is Grease Is the Word (originally written by Barry Gibb for the 1978 film) produced by Daniel Crean & Eren Cannata and performed by the show’s cast. Composer Hanan Townshend (Knight of CupsTo the Wonder, Semper Fi, Outcry, The Book of Vision) is reuniting with director Julio Quintana on the upcoming sports drama The Long Game. The film starring Jay Hernandez, Dennis Quaid, Cheech Marin, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Julian Works, Oscar Nuñez, Brett Cullen, Richard Robichaux and Paulina Chávez is set in 1950s Texas and follows five young Mexican-American caddies at a local, exclusive golf club where the discriminatory laws of the era forbade them from playing, as they create their own homemade course in the Texas desert. Opening in theater nationwide this weekend is the horror sequel Scream VI directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett and starring Melissa Barrera, Courteney Cox, Jenna Ortega, Hayden Panettiere, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Dermot Mulroney and Samara Weaving. The film’s original music is composed by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Fast & Furious, Avengers: Age of Ultron) & Sven Faulconer (Blood Father, The Last Ice, The Elephant Whisperers). Also opening wide is the sci-fi thriller 65 written and directed by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods and starring Adam Driver, Chloe Coleman and Ariana Greenblatt. Chris Bacon (Source Code, Wednesday, Gnomeo & Juliet, Men in Black: International, Bates Motel) has composed the film’s original music. Genie Music has released a new soundtrack album for the South Korean Netflix original series The Glory. The album features selections of the original music from show composed by Jung Se Rin (A Frozen Flower, Barefoot Dream, Trolley), Joo In Ro, Kim Taejin, Kim Jun Seok, Kang Min Goo & others. The soundtrack is now available to stream/download here, where you can also check out audio samples. The label has previously released a soundtrack EP featuring five songs from the first part of the show.
