Following our television music series from the summer, Film Music Reporter presents a listing of this fall’s new network dramas and comedies and its composers, as well as the major new cable shows of the season that feature original music. Featured in part 1 are the shows on FOX. Articles for all other networks will be published within the next few weeks.

Currently finishing up its premiere season is the sci-fi adventure show Terra Nova produced by Steven Spielberg and Brannon Braga and starring Jason O’Mara, Stephen Lang, Shelley Conn, Landon Liboiron and Naomi Scott. Brian Tyler is the composer of all 13 episodes of the first season. Two videos from the orchestral recording sessions of the score on the Fox Scoring Stage can be checked out on YouTube (Cycles of Time and Magical Journey). Three new movies opened in wide release this past Wednesday:

The film released in most theaters this Thanksgiving weekend is the new movie adaptation of The Muppets directed by James Bobin and starring Amy Adams, Jason Segel and Chris Cooper. The film’s score is written by Christophe Beck and Bret McKenzie serves as the project’s music supervisor and has also written several songs for the movie. A soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film has been released on Walt Disney Records. To find out more about the album, visit out our previous article. Also opening wide is the family movie Hugo directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Sascha Baron Cohen, Jude Law, Emily Mortimer, Ben Kingsley, Ray Winstone and Christopher Lee. Howard Shore has composed the music for the film. A soundtrack album including the composer’s score has been released on his own label Howe Records last Tuesday. Harry Gregson-Williams has mentioned in a recent interview with Animated Views that he has just started to work on the score for the indie drama Mister Pip. The movie is directed by Andrew Adamson who has collaborated with the composer on the director’s previous movies, including the first two Shrek films and the first and second installment in the Chronicles of Narnia series. Mister Pip is based on the novel by Lloyd Jones and stars Hugh Laurie as last the white man left on the war-torn island of Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea who reads the kids his favorite novel, Great Expectations. A young girl conjures the novel’s Victorian characters and befriends Pip who helps her to endure the violence and moral uncertainty of her daily life. Kerry Fox, Alliv Samson and Eka Darville are co-starring. Adamson is producing the Olympus Pictures and Eyeworks production with Leslie Urdang & Dean Vanech (Rabbit Hole, Beginners) and Robin Scholes (Once Were Warriors). Read the rest of this entry »

Rhino Records is set to release the official soundtrack album for Jason Reitman’s dramedy Young Adult. The album includes one track by the composer of the film Rolfe Kent (who previously scored the director’s Thank You for Smoking and Up in the Air), as well as five tracks by Juno composer Mateo Messina. Also featured on the soundtrack are the songs from the movie by artists including Diana Ross, 4 Non Blondes, The Replacements, Lemonheads, Veruca Salt, Teenage Fanclub, Cracker, Dinosaur Jr. and Suicidal Tendencies. The soundtrack will be released on December 6, 2011 and the CD is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips from all tracks on the album after the jump. ComingSoon.net is reporting that Michael Giacchino has confirmed that he will be returning to score the upcoming (currently untitled) Star Trek sequel. The assignment was expected as the composer has previously scored all of director J.J. Abrams’ previous movies, including the first Star Trek film in 2009. All primary cast members are expected to return for the sequel, including Chris Pine, Zachary  Quinto and Zoe Saldana. Abrams is co-writing the script with Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (Transformers). It has also just been announced that the movie will be shot in 3D and has been set for a release on May 17, 2013. Giacchino has been doing a lot of press in the last couple of days about his score for Super 8, which has been released on Blu-Ray and DVD this past Tuesday. Robert Folk has recently scored the epic historical drama There Be Dragons: Secrets of Passion. The film directed by Roland Joffé (The Mission) and produced by James Ordonez stars Charlie Cox, Wes Bentley, Dougray Scott, Rodrigo Santoro, Derek Jacobi and Olga Kurylenko. The movie is set during the Spanish Civil War and revolves around two childhood friends who became separated during the political conflict to find themselves on opposite sides as war erupts. As reported earlier this year, Stephen Warbeck has scored the original version of There Be Dragons that was released in theaters this past May. Folk has written the music for a recut version of the drama, which will be released under the title There Be Dragons: Secrets of Passion. Read the rest of this entry »

‘The Lady’ Soundtrack Details

SME Strategic Marketing Group will be releasing the official soundtrack album for Luc Besson’s drama The Lady. The album includes the original score by the director’s regular musical collaborator Eric Serra, as well as the song Soldier of Love by Sade. The soundtrack is scheduled to come out digitally on November 28, 2011 in Europe. A physical release is set to be released on December 6 overseas and is available as an import on Amazon. No word yet on a domestic release of the soundtrack, but check back on this site for updates. The Lady stars Michelle Yeoh as the political activist Aung San Suu Kyi who spent almost 15 years under house arrest in Burma until November of last year and David Thewlis as her husband Michael Aris. Cinema Musica has uploaded the first audio previews of the soundtrack for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows by composer Hans Zimmer. The article is in German, but scroll down the page to listen to short audio clips from each track on the soundtrack. As reported last week, the soundtrack will be released by WaterTower Music on December 13, 2011 and is available for pre-order on Amazon. Alexandre Desplat is set to reunite with director Florent Emilio Siri on the upcoming biographical drama Cloclo. The composer has scored all of the director’s previous features, including the Bruce Willis-starring thriller Hostage, the crime thriller The Nest and most recently, the historical drama L’ennemi intime. Cloclo stars Jérémie Renier as French singer Claude François who was a star of “chanson française” in the 1960 and 70s and died in a tragic accident in 1978, at the age of 39. Benoît Magimel, Monica Scattini, Ana Girardot, Joséphine Japy and Robert Knepper who plays Frank Sinatra are co-starring in the drama. Julien Rappeneau (The Heir Apparent: Largo Winch) has written the screenplay and Cyril Colbeau-Justin & Jean-Baptiste Dupont (36th Precint, Point Blank) are producing the project. WaterTower Music has announced a soundtrack album for Garry Marshall’s ensemble comedy New Year’s Eve. The album includes a number of songs from the movie by artists, including Jon Bon Jovi, actress Lea Michele, Kate York, Goo Goo Dolls, P!nk, Katie Herzig, Charles Brown, Duncan and Sophie B. Hawkins. The soundtrack will be released on December 6, 2011. Check out audio clips from all songs on the album below and visit Amazon to download the album. None of the original score by John Debney is included on the album, but a separate score album might be released at a later date (just as with Marshall’s previous movie Valentine’s Day).
