Michael Giacchino has been hired to score the upcoming Aardman CGI-animation Arthur Christmas. The film envisions Santa’s workshop as a high-tech industrial plant dedicated to getting all those toys out to every child in a single night. The movie directed by Barry Cook (Mulan) is scheduled to come out in November 2011 by Sony Pictures. The previous Aardman features had scores by John Powell (Chicken Run), Harry Gregson-Williams (Chicken Run, Flushed Away) and Julian Nott (Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit). The documentary Jealous of the Birds will get an original score by Hans Zimmer and Alexey Igudesman. The movie focuses on the emotional history of a small community of Holocaust Survivors who remained in Frankfurt, Germany after liberation from Nazi death camps, and asks the question, ‘Why would a Survivor choose to remain in Germany — shoulder to shoulder with their perpetrators?’ Co-composer Alexey Igudesman was one of the many musicians who performed on Zimmer’s Oscar-nominated score for Sherlock Holmes. No release date has been announced yet for the movie.
The Back-up Plan score album announced

Lakeshore Records has announced a score album for the upcoming romantic comedy The Back-up Plan. The film scored by Stephen Trask centers on a woman who conceives twins through artificial insemination, only to meet the man of her dreams on the very same day. The movie stars Jennifer Lopez and Alex O’Loughlin and will be released by CBS Films on April 23. The score album will come out on April 13 and Lakeshore Records will also release a song soundtrack album on the same day. A tracklisting will be added soon.
John Frizzell scoring The Roommate

John Frizzell has recently been finishing up work on his score for the Screen Gems thriller The Roommate. In the movie, College freshman Sara played by Minka Kelly is randomly assigned to live in a dorm with another girl named Rebecca (Leighton Meester) who outwardly seems sweet and normal. She soon finds her safety and the lives of those closest to her jeopardized as Rebecca’s strange and increasingly murderous true personality emerges. The movie directed by Christian E. Christiansen also co-stars Cam Gigandet and Billy Zane. The Roommate is scheduled to open on February 4, 2011.

Beltrami takes over Jonah Hex

Film Music Reporter has learned that Marco Beltrami has taken over scoring duties on the comic book adaptation Jonah Hex. He is replacing John Powell, who reportedly was working on the score with the heavy metal band Mastodon last fall. No word yet if any of Mastodon’s music will stay in the picture. Jonah Hex is set in the Wild West, where a scarred bounty hunter tracks a voodoo practitioner bent on liberating the South by raising an army of the undead. The movie is directed by Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears A Who!) and stars Megan Fox, Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Michael Shannon. Warner Bros has the movie scheduled to be released on June 18. Two new projects for Ilan Eshkeri

Ilan Eshkeri recently finished recording the scores for two new film projects. The Kid is a movie about central character Kevin Lewis, whose early life suffered from appalling parenting and bullying at school. The movie directed by Nick Moran stars Rupert Friend, Natascha McElhone and Ioan Gruffudd. Falcon Films will release the movie in the UK later this year. In addition to writing the original score, Eshkeri also co-produced the recordings of classical music references for the movie, including sections from Elgar’s cello concerto and Brahm’s third symphony. Eshkeri also wrote the music for the Sky mini-series Strike Back. Strike Back follows the lives of two former soldiers, Major Hugh Collinson and discharged veteran John Porter, who meet for the first time during a Middle East hostage crisis. The six-part series will air on British TV later this year. The music was also recorded with the London Metropolitan Orchestra, who posted an entry about the recording sessions on their blog. Badelt’s Heartbreakers score released

Label Zero recently released Klaus Badelt’s score to the French comedy L’arnacoeur (Heartbreakers). The movie about two siblings who are running a business designed to break up relationships, when they are hired by a rich man to break up the wedding of his daughter. The movie stars Romain Duris and Vanessa Paradis. The movies comes out this week in France. No domestic release date has been announced yet. Badelt’s score is available as a download-only release on Amazon (click the link for sound clips). The album contains 22 tracks of Badelt’s score for about 30 minutes of music. Morricone’s White Dog score released

Film Score Monthly has announced their newest CD release: Ennio Morricone’s score the 1982 drama White Dog. In the movie, a trainer is attempting to reprogram a vicious dog who’s been trained to attack and kill people with black skin. The movie directed by Samuel Fuller (Shark!, The Big Red One) stars Kristy McNichol. The movie was only recently released on DVD and was virtually unseen before in the US. Film Score Monthly’s premiere CD release is limited to 3000 copies and features the complete score.
