Nicholas Hooper has scored the Working Title Television two part serial Birdsong. The mini-series directed by Philip Martin (Prime Suspect 7: The Final Act) based on the bestselling novel by Sebastian Faulks (Charlotte Gray) has been adapted for the screen by Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady, Shame). The movie set against the First World War tells the story of a soldier who finds himself fighting in the area where he had an illicit affair before the war. The cast includes Eddie Redmayne and Clemence Poesy. Lynn Horsford (Boy A) is producing the project. The two-part film premiered on BBC over the last two weeks. One of the best received films that premiered at the festival is the drama Smashed directed by James Ponsoldt (Off the Black). The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul as s a married couple whose bond is built on a mutual love of alcohol and whose relationship is put to the test when the wife decides to get sober. The cast also includes Octavia Spencer, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and Mary Kay Place. Ponsoldt co-wrote the screenplay with Susan Burke and Jennifer Cochis, Jonathan Schwartz, Andrea Sperling (Like Crazy) are producing. The film’s music is written by Andy Cabic and Eric D. Johnson. While the project marks Cabic’s feature scoring debut, Johnson has previously written the music for the Uma Thurman-starring romance Ceremony and co-scored last year’s indie comedy Our Idiot Brother starring Paul Rudd. Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the action drama The Grey directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Dallas Roberts, Joe Anderson and James Badge Dale. The film’s music is composed by Marc Streitenfeld who has become go-to composer of Ridley Scott (who is producing The Grey) over the last couple of years, having previously scored such films as American Gangster and Robin Hood. Also opening wide is the action thriller Man on a Ledge directed by Asger Leth and starring Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Ed Harris, Jamie Bell, Anthony Mackie, Genesis Rodriguez, Edward Burns and Kyra Sedgwick. Henry Jackman (X-Men: First Class, Puss in Boots) has written the music for the film. Summit Entertainment has released a soundtrack album featuring Jackman’s music. The album is already available to download and the CD version will be released on February 7. Craig Wedren is scoring the upcoming indie comedy drama Thanks for Sharing. The film marks the directorial debut of Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Stuart Blumberg (The Kids Are All Right) and stars Mark Ruffalo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins, Joely Richardson, Patrick Fugit, Josh Gad and Alecia Moore. The movie revolves around a group of unlikely friends who are brought together through their shared determination to recover from sex addiction and forge meaningful relationships for the first time in their lives. ‘The Vow’ Soundtrack Announced

Rhino Records will be releasing the soundtrack album for the romantic drama The Vow. The album includes songs from the movie by artists including Meat Loaf, Matt Pond PA, The National, The Cure, Light FM, Voxhaul Broadcast, OK Go and Lykke Li. The soundtrack will be released on February 7, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips from all tracks on the album below. None of Rachel Portman’s and Michael Brook’s score is included on the release. Among the documentaries that premiered at this year’s festival is Finding North directed by Kristi Jacobson (Toots) and Lori Silverbush. The film examines the issue of hunger in America through the lens of three people struggling with food insecurity. Both directors are also producing the movie with Julie Goldman (Buck) and Ryan Harrington (American Teen). T Bone Burnett and The Civil Wars have written the documentary’s music. The project marks Burnett’s first documentary credit as a composer. Aaron Zigman has signed on to score the upcoming comedy drama The Marriage Counselor. The film is written and directed by Tyler Perry and stars Jurnee Smollett as an Ivy League educated relationship expert who gives marital advice for a living, yet can’t seem to follow that advice in her own marriage. The cast also includes Lance Gross, Kim Kardashian, Vanessa Williams, Brandy Norwood, Robbie Jones, Ella Joyce and Jerry Stiller. Paul Hall and Ozzie Areu, both regular collaborators of the filmmaker are producing the movie. Zigman has become Perry’s composer of choice for his feature projects over the last couple of years. ‘Safe House’ Soundtrack Details

The album includes the original score by composer Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones, Iron Man, Clash of the Titans). The soundtrack release date has been pushed back two weeks since our previous announcement and is now scheduled for February 21, 2012. To pre-order the album, visit Amazon. Paul Leonard-Morgan Scoring ‘Dredd’

Paul Leonard-Morgan is scoring the upcoming comic book adaptation Dredd. The film is based on the Judge Dredd comic book series about a powerful cop in Mega City One, a city that runs down the entire east coast of America. The movie stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Jason Cope and Domhnall Gleeson. Pete Travis (Vantage Point) directed the film, but it has been reported that the project’s writer Alex Garland (28 Days Later…, Sunshine) has taken over the editing process due to creative differences. Andrew Macdonald (Sunshine, Trainspotting), Allon Reich (Never Let Me Go) are producing the 3D movie with Garland. The comic book has previously been turned into a movie version starring Sylvester Stallone, which was released in 1995 and featured a score by Alan Silvestri.
