Weekly Film Music Roundup (August 24, 2018)

Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the comedy The Happytime Murders directed by Brian Henson and starring Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale and Elizabeth Banks. The film’s original music is composed by Christopher Lennertz (Horrible Bosses, Lost in Space, Ride Along, Agent Carter, Sausage Party). No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Also opening wide is the sci-fi family adventure A.X.L. written and directed by Oliver Daly and starring Alex Neustaedter, Becky G and Alex MacNicoll. Ian Hultquist (Assassination Nation, The Gospel According to Andre, Animals, Ivory Tower, My Blind Brother) has composed the film’s original music. ‘Yardie’ Score Album Released

Globe Productions has released a score album for the crime drama Yardie. The album features the film’s original music composed by Dickon Hinchliffe (Winter’s Bone, Locke, Out of the Furnace, Last Chance Harvey, Peaky Blinders). The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. As previously reported, Universal-Island Records has released a separate soundtrack featuring the songs from the movie today. Yardie marks the feature directorial debut of Idris Elba and stars Aml Ameen, Shantol Jackson, Stephen Graham, Fraser James, Sheldon Shepherd and Everaldo Cleary. Dan Romer (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Beasts of No Nation, Easy) is composing the original music for the upcoming drama Skin. The film is written and directed by Guy Nattiv (The Flood, Strangers) and stars Jamie Bell, Vera Farmiga, Danielle Macdonald, Mike Colter and Bill Camp. The movie tells the true life story of Bryon Widner, a young man raised by skinheads, for whom turning his back on hatred and violence meant undergoing painful and expensive operations to remove the tattoos that signified his terrible past life. ‘Harlots’ Season 2 Soundtrack Album Released

Milan Records has released a new soundtrack album for the Hulu original series Harlots. The album features selections of the original music from the show’s second season composed by Rael Jones (Suite Francaise, My Cousin Rachel, Kids in Love). The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. Silva Screen Records has previously released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score from the first season. Harlots is created by Moira Buffini & Alison Newman and stars Samantha Morton, Jessica Brown Findlay, Lesley Manville, Eloise Smyth, Dorothy Atkinson, Pippa Bennett-Warner and Sebastian Armesto and Liv Tyler. James Corden’s ‘Percy’s Pressure’ from ‘Smallfoot’ Released

WaterTower Music has released the song Percy’s Pressure from the animated feature Smallfoot. The track performed by James Corden (who is lending his voice to the movie’s title character) is a cover of the classic Queen/David Bowie song Under Pressure and features new lyrics by Karey Kirkpatrick & Wayne Kirkpatrick. The song is now available to download as a digital single on Amazon. Karey & Wayne Kirkpatrick have also written the original song Wonderful Life, which is performed by Zendaya and was released earlier this week. Soundtrack Album for Syfy’s ‘Z Nation’ to Be Released

BMG will release the first soundtrack album for the Syfy original series Z Nation. The album features selections of the original music from the show’s first four seasons composed by Jason Gallagher who is also known as a member of the rock band Leroy Justice. The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, August 24 and will be available to download on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples. Z Nation is created by Karl Schaefer & Craig Engler and stars Kellita Smith, DJ Qualls, Michael Welch, Kellita Smith, Keith Allan, Russell Hodgkinson, Nat Zhang and Anastasia Baranova. ‘The 100’ Season 5 Soundtrack Album Announced

The album features selections of the original score from the show’s fifth season composed by Tree Adams (Californication, NCIS: New Orleans, Perception). The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, August 24 and will be available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio clips. The label has previously released soundtrack albums featuring the composer’s score from the series’ third and fourth season. The 100 is developed by Jason Rothenberg based on the book by Kass Morgan stars Eliza Taylor, Paige Turco, Bob Morley, Marie Avgeropoulos, Christopher Larkin, Isaiah Washington, Henry Ian Cusick and Lindsey Morgan. Hildur Gudnadottir to Score Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’ Origin Movie

Hildur Gudnadottir has been hired to score the upcoming Joker origin movie. Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Old School, Starsky & Hutch, War Dogs) will direct the film, which is set to star Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, alongside Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Zazie Beetz and Marc Maron. The movie based on the DC Comics character is reportedly set in Gotham City in the early 1980s. No plot details have been announced yet. Phillips has also co-written the screenplay with Scott Silver (The Fighter, 8 Mile) and is producing the project with Emma Tillinger Koskoff (The Wolf of Wall Street, Silence). BMG will release a soundtrack album for the drama Papillon. The album features the film’s original music composed by David Buckley (The Good Wife, Jason Bourne, The Forbidden Kingdom, The Nice Guys). The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, August 24 and will be available to download on Amazon. Papillon is directed by Michael Noer and stars Charlie Hunnam, Rami Malek, Yorick Can Wagenhingen, Roland Møller, Tommy Flanagan and Eve Hewson. The movie is based on the books Papillon and Banco by Henri Charrière and tells the story of a safecracker from the Parisian underworld who is framed for murder and condemned to life in the notorious penal colony on Devils Island. Hans Zimmer to Score Patty Jenkins’ ‘Wonder Woman 1984’

Hans Zimmer has signed on to score the upcoming superhero sequel Wonder Woman 1984. The film is directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster) who previously helmed last year’s original movie (scored by Rupert Gregson-Williams) and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal. The movie follows the title character as she comes into conflict with the Soviet Union during the Cold War in the 1980s, and finds a formidable foe in the form of the Cheetah.
