Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the comedy The Happytime Murders directed by Brian Henson and starring Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale and Elizabeth Banks. The film’s original music is composed by Christopher Lennertz (Horrible Bosses, Lost in Space, Ride Along, Agent Carter, Sausage Party). No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Also opening wide is the sci-fi family adventure A.X.L. written and directed by Oliver Daly and starring Alex Neustaedter, Becky G and Alex MacNicoll. Ian Hultquist (Assassination NationThe Gospel According to AndreAnimalsIvory TowerMy Blind Brother) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Check out our previous news article for the full album details.

Opening semi-wide in around 500 theaters is the drama Papillon directed by Michael Noer and starring Charlie Hunnam, Rami Malek, Yorick Can Wagenhingen, Roland Møller, Tommy Flanagan and Eve Hewson. The film’s original music is composed by David Buckley (The Good WifeJason BourneThe Forbidden KingdomThe Nice Guys). BMG has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Opening in select theaters before expanding nationwide next weekend is the thriller Searching co-written and directed by Aneesh Chaganty and starring John Cho, Debra Messing, Joseph Lee and Michelle La. Torin Borrowdale has composed the film’s original music. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in limited release is the indie comedy Support the Girls written and directed by Andrew Bujalski and starring Regina Hall, Haley Lu Richardson, Shayna McHayle, Brooklyn Decker, Jana Kramer, James Le Gros, Dylan Gelula, AJ Michalka and Lea DeLaria. The movie doesn’t feature an original score. Liz Lawson serves as the project’s music supervisor. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which revolves around the general manager at a highway-side ”sports bar with curves”, premiered at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and is being released by Magnolia Pictures. Also opening in select theaters is the drama The Bookshop written and directed by Isabel Coixet and starring Emily Mortimer, Bill Nighy and Patricia Clarkson.  Alfonso de Vilallonga (Snow WhiteTranssiberianMy Life Without Me) has composed the film’s original music. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score was released this past fall when the movie opened overseas. Another limited release this week is the comedy Arizona directed by Jonathan Watson and starring Danny McBride, Rosemarie DeWitt, Luke Wilson, Elizabeth Gillies, Kaitlin Olson and David Alan Grier. The film’s original music is composed by Joseph Stephens (Observe and Report, Eastbound and Down, Flower, Vice Principals). No soundtrack album has been released. The comedy premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released in select theaters and on VOD by RLJ Entertainment. Check out our previous article to learn more about the film.

Also opening in limited release is the crime comedy Blue Iguana written and directed by Hadi Hajaig and starring Sam Rockwell, Ben Schwartz and Phoebe Fox. Simon Lambros (Cleanskin) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The comedy revolves around two ex-jailbirds who are on parole and working in a New York diner and get enlisted by an English lawyer to go to London and steal a gem called the Blue Iguana. The movie is being released in select theaters and on VOD by Screen Media Films.
