THR is reporting that songwriters Kate Anderson & Elyssa Samsel are teaming up with Josh Gad on a movie musical based on the American folk tale of Rip Van Winkle. Cynthia Erivo is attached to star in the film, which is based on the short story written by Washington Irving (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow) about a villager who falls asleep only to wake up decades later and missing the American Revolution. Aegean Entertainment has released a soundtrack album for the historical drama Cliffs of Freedom. The album features the film’s original music composed and conducted by George Kallis (The Black PrinceAlbion: The Enchanted Stallion93 Days). The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. A CD version is also in the works. Cliffs of Freedom is directed by Van Ling and stars Tania Raymonde, Patti LuPone, Kevin Corrigan, Jan Uddin, Billy Zane, Raza Jeffrey and Christopher Plummer. The movie tells the story of an ill-fated romance between a Greek village girl and a conflicted Turkish officer during the dawn of the Greek War for Independence against the Ottoman Empire in 1821. The film marks the narrative feature directorial debut of Academy Award-nominated documentarian Liz Garbus (What Happened Miss Simone?) and stars Amy Ryan, Gabriel Byrne, Thomasin McKenzie, Lola Kirke, Oona Laurence, Reed Birney, Dean Winters, Miriam ShorKevin Corrigan and Rosal Colon. The movie is based on Robert Kolker’s book of the same name and follows Mari Gilbert as she relentlessly drives law enforcement agents to search for her missing daughter and in the process sheds light on a wave of unsolved murders of young female sex workers on the South Shore barrier islands of Long Island. Walt Disney Pictures has announced that Arcade Fire has recorded a new version of the Academy Award-nominated song Baby Mine for Disney’s upcoming Dumbo live-action movie. The song was originally written by Frank Churchill and Ned Washington (lyrics) for the 1941 animated classic. The new version will be featured during the movie’s end credits and will be included on the official soundtrack album, which also features the film’s original score by Danny Elfman, which is set to be released digitally on March 29 and physically on April 5 by Walt Disney Records. Zentropa Music has released a soundtrack album for Hans Petter Moland’s Norwegian drama Out Stealing Horses (Ut Og Stjæle Hester). The album features the film’s original music composed by Kaspar Kaae who previously scored the director’s feature Kraftidioten. Out Stealing Horses is written and directed by Moland (Cold Pursuit) and stars Stellan Skarsgård, Bjørn Floberg, Tobias Santelmann, Jon Ranes and Danica Curcic. Premiering tonight is the HBO original documentary Leaving Neverland directed by Dan Reed about Michael Jackson’s long-running relationships with two boys, aged 7 and 10, and their families. The 2-parter’s original music is composed by Chad Hobson (Adulthood, Sket, Offender, Path of Blood). Premiering on Friday, March 8, is the Netflix original movie Juanita directed by Clark Johnson and starring Alfre Woodard, Adam Beach, Blair Underwood and LaTanya Richardson Jackson. Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the comedy A Madea Family Funeral written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry who also stars in the movie with Cassi Davis and Patrice Lovely. Philip White (Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, Nobody’s Fool) has composed the film’s original score and Christopher Lennertz (Ride Along, Horrible Bosses, Lost in Space, Baywatch) has written the themes. Also opening wide is the psychological thriller Greta directed by Neil Jordan and starring Isabelle Huppert, Chloë Grace Moretz, Maika Monroe, Colm Feore and Stephen Rea.
