Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the Ghostbusters reboot directed by Paul Feig and starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth. The film’s original score is composed by Theodore Shapiro (Tropic Thunder, Spy, The Devil Wears Prada) who also makes a cameo appearance in the movie. Sony Classical has released soundtrack featuring the composer’s score (click here for the full album details). RCA Records has released a separate soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by artists including WALK THE MOON, Fall Out Boy ft. Missy Elliott, Elle King, DMX & more, as well as the track Want Some More co-written by Shapiro and performed by Beasts of Mayhem. Check out our previous article for the full album details.
Also opening wide is the crime thriller The Infiltrator directed by Brad Furman and starring Bryan Cranston, Diane Kruger, John Leguizamo, Benjamin Bratt, Amy Ryan, Joseph Gilgun and Yul Vazquez. Chris Hajian (First Position, Yonkers Joe, The Take) has composed the film’s original score. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding nationwide over the next few weeks is the romantic comedy Cafe Society written and directed by Woody Allen and starring Jeannie Berlin, Steve Carell, Jesse Eisenberg, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Kristen Stewart, Corey Stoll and Ken Stott. The movie doesn’t feature an original score. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring early 20th Century jazz standards newly recorded for the film from Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks as featured in the movie, as well as classic recordings from Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Ben Selvin. Also opening in limited release is the sci-fi drama Equals directed by Drake Doremus and starring Kristen Stewart, Nicholas Hoult, Guy Pearce, Bel Powley, Jacki Weaver, Kate Lyn Sheil, Claudia Kim and David Selby. The film’s original music is composed by Dustin O’Halloran (Transparent, Like Crazy) and Apparat (aka Sascha Ring). No soundtrack album has been announced. Equals centers on two young people who somehow manage to fall in love in an oppressive futuristic society where human emotions have been eradicated. The romance premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released in theaters by A24. Visit the official movie website for more information.
Also opening in select theaters is the western Outlaws and Angels written and directed by JT Mollner and starring Chad Michael Murray, Francesca Eastwood, Madisen Beaty, Ben Browder, Frances Fisher, Keith Loneker, Luke Wilson and Teri Polo. Colin Stetson (Lavender) has composed the film’s original music and Aleks de Carvalho (Loitering with Intent, The Phenom) has contributed additional music. A soundtrack album will be announced soon. Outlaws and Angels premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being distributed by Momentum Pictures and Orion Releasing.
Also opening in select cities is the sports family comedy drama Undrafted written and directed by Joe Mazzello and starring Chace Crawford, Tyler Hoechlin, Aaron Tveit, Philip Winchester, Billy Gardell, Jim Belushi, Duke Davis Roberts, Manny Montana, Toby Hemingway and Michael Fishman. The film’s original music is composed by Stephen Barton (Jennifer’s Body, Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont). No word on a soundtrack release.
