Opening in theaters nationwide today is the superhero movie Thunderbolts* directed by Jake Schreier and starring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour,Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lewis Pullman, Chris Bauer, Geraldine Viswanathan and Wendell Edward Pierce. The film’s original music is composed by Son Lux (Ryan Lott, Ian Chang & Rafiq Bhatia) (Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Paper Towns). Hollywood Records & Marvel Music have released a soundtrack album featuring the band’s score this past Wednesday. Opening semi-wide in around 900 theaters today is the psychological thriller The Surfer directed by Lorcan Finnegan and starring Nicolas Cage, Julian McMahon, Alexander Bertrand, Nic Cassim, Justin Rosniak and Miranda Tapsell. François Tétaz (Wolf Creek, Hesher, Judy & Punch, Rogue, The Portal) has composed the film’s original music. Rubber Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today and Impressed Recordings will release a vinyl edition in the coming weeks. Also opening semi-wide in around 800 theaters is the horror thriller Rosario directed by Felipe Vargas and starring Emeraude Toubia, David Dastmalchian, Diana Lein, José Zúñiga, Paul Ben-Victor and Emilia Fauche. The film’s original music is composed by Will Blair & Brooke Blair (Green Room, Rebel Ridge, The Informer, I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, The Toxic Avenger, Blue Ruin, Black Christmas, Hold the Dark). Opening in select U.S. theaters today is the Canadian/German coming-of-age romantic drama Bonjour Tristesse written and directed by Durga Chew-Bose and starring Lily McInerny, Claes Bang, Chloë Sevigny, Aliocha Schneider and Naïlia Harzoune. Lesley Barber (Manchester by the Sea, The Moth Diaries, You Can Count On Me, Late Night, Mansfield Park) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie, which is based on Françoise Sagan’s novel of the same name about a 18-year-old girl who is is relaxing by the French seaside with her father and falling in love with her new boyfriend, premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and is being distributed by Greenwich Entertainment.
Also opening in select theaters is the biographical drama Words of War directed by James Strong and starring Maxine Peak, Ciarán Hinds, Jason Isaacs, Ellie Bamber, Ian Hart, Harry Lawtey, Sophie Simnett and Ben Miles. The film’s original music is composed by Snorri Hallgrímsson (Chalk the Line, Innocence, Chasing the Present) and produced by Ólafur Arnalds (Broadchurch, Moonhaven, Surface, Electric Dreams). No soundtrack album has been released yet. The movie, which is based on the life of journalist Anna Politkovskaya whose crusade to be an independent voice of truth inside Putin’s Russia put her life in jeopardy, is being released in the U.S. by Decal.
Opening in select U.S. theaters and on VOD today is the British boxing drama Salvable directed by Björn Franklin & Johnny Marchetta and starring Toby Kebbell, Shia LaBeouf and James Cosmo. Irish singer/songwriter David Keenan has composed the film’s original music and has made his feature scoring debut on the project. No word on a soundtrack release.
