Five new movies are opening in theaters nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the family adventure Dora and the Lost City of Gold directed by James Bobin and starring Isabela Moner, Eugenio Derbez, Michael Peña, Eva Longoria, Nicholas Coombe and Madeleine Madden. The film’s original score is composed by John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2, The Jungle Book) & Germaine Franco (Tag, Dope). Also opening wide is the horror thriller Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark directed by André Øvredal and starring Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, Lorraine Toussaint, Austin Zajur and Natalie Ganzhorn. Marco Beltrami (3:10 to Yuma, Scream, A Quiet Place, Logan) & Anna Dubrich have composed the film’s original music. Also opening nationwide is the crime drama The Kitchen written and directed by Andrea Berloff and starring Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, Elisabeth Moss, Domhnall Gleeson, James Badge Dale, Brian d’Arcy James, Margo Martindale, Common and Bill Camp. The film’s original music is composed by Bryce Dessner (The Revenant, The Two Popes) of The National. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as The Highwomen’s cover of Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain. Another nationwide release this week is the drama The Art of Racing in the Rain directed by Simon Curtis and starring Milo Ventimiglia, Amanda Seyfried, Gary Cole, Kathy Baker, Ryan Keira Armstrong and Martin Donovan. Dustin O’Halloran (Transparent, The Hate U Give) & Volker Bertelmann (Lion, Adrift, Patrick Melrose) have composed the film’s original music. Also opening wide is the drama Brian Banks directed by Tom Shadyac and starring Aldis Hodge, Greg Kinnear, Sherri Shepherd and Melanie Liburd. Opening in limited release is the drama After the Wedding written and directed by Bart Freundlich and starring Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams, Billy Crudup and Abby Quinn. Mychael Danna (Life of Pi, Capote, Moneyball, Little Miss Sunshine) has composed the film’s original music. Music.Film Recordings and Varèse Sarabande have released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as an original song by Quinn and tracks by The Commodores and The Counterfits. Also opening in limited release is the drama The Peanut Butter Falcon directed by Tyler Nilson & Michael Schwartz and starring Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson, Zack Gottsagen and Thomas Haden Church. The film’s original score is composed by Zach Dawes, Jonathan Sadoff (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Ingrid Goes West) and Punch Brothers members Noam Pikelny & Gabe Witcher. Also opening in select cities is the indie drama Light of My Life written and directed by Casey Affleck who also stars in the movie alongside Anna Pniowsky, Tom Bower and Elisabeth Moss. Daniel Hart (Pete’s Dragon, The Old Man and the Gun, A Ghost Story, The Exorcist, Strange Angel) has composed the film’s original music. Also opening in select theaters is the documentary One Child Nation directed by Nanfu Wang & Jialing Zhang about the the devastating consequences of China’s One-Child Policy through the words of those who lived through it. The film’s original music is composed by Nathan Halpern (The Rider, Rich Hill) & Chris Ruggiero (Minding the Gap). No word on a soundtrack release. Another limited release this week is the comedy Ode to Joy directed by Jason Winer and starring Martin Freeman, Morena Baccarin, Melissa Rauch, Jake Lacy, Jane Curtin, Shannon Woodward and Adam Shapiro. Jeremy Turner (Five Came Back, Family, Come As You Are) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced.
