John Murphy (28 Days Later…, Sunshine, Snatch, Miami Vice, Kick-Ass) has signed on to score the upcoming BBC/PBS Masterpiece mini-series Les Miserables. The show is developed by Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’s Diary, House of Cards, War & Peace) based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel and stars Dominic West as Jean Valjean, David Oyelowo as Javert, Lily Collins and Fantine, Adeel Akhtar and Olivia Colman as Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, as well as Ellie Bamber, Josh O’Connor and Erin Kellyman. The 6-part drama delves deep into the layers of Hugo’s story, exploring Valjean and policeman Javert’s cat-and-mouse relationship, against the backdrop of France at a time of civil unrest. Davies, West & Oleyowo are also executive producing the project with Faith Penhale (War & Peace, Press) for Lookout Point, Bethan Jones (Sherlock, Atlantis) for BBC Studios, Mona Qureshi (The Little Drummer Girl) for BBC One and Rebecca Eaton (Downton Abbey, Sherlock) for Masterpiece. Tom Shankland (The City and the City) is directing all episodes. Les Miserables will premiere in the UK on BBC One and will make its U.S. debut on PBS. In the episode 1 scene where Fantine dances with her lover the music is a version of the “Buison Fleuri d’ Auvergne.” Does anyone know who recorded this variation?
