Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the survival drama Adrift directed by Baltasar Kormákur and starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin. The film’s original music is composed by Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) (LionPatrick MelroseGunpowder, The Current War). Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as Emiliana Torrini’s cover of Tom Waits’ I Hope That I Don’t Fall in Love With You. Also opening wide is the sci-fi thriller Upgrade written and directed by Leigh Whannell and starring Logan Marshall-Green, Betty Gabriel, Harrison Gilbertson and Benedict Hardie. Jed Palmer (OtherLife) has composed the film’s original music. Also opening nationwide is the comedy Action Point directed by Tim Kirkby and starring Johnny Knoxville, Chris Pontius, Dan Bakkedahl, Matt Schulze, Eleanor Worthington-Cox, Johnny Pemberton, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Joshua Hoover, Conner McVicker and Eric Manaka. The film’s original music composed by singer/songwriter Deke Dickerson and Andrew Feltenstein & John Nau (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, The House, Casa De Mi Padre). Opening in limited release is the heist thriller American Animals written and directed by Bart Layton and starring Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner, Jared Abrahamson, Ann Dowd and Udo Kier. Anne Nikitin (The ImposterThis Beautiful FantasticCaptive) has composed the film’s original music. The Orchard has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Opening in New York before moving to other markets within the next few weeks is the drama A Kid Like Jake directed by Silas Howard and starring Claire Danes, Jim Parsons, Octavia Spencer, Priyanka Chopra, Amy Landecker, Ann Dowd, Leo James Davis and Rhys Bhatia. The film’s original music is composed by Roger Neill (Beginners, King of the Hill, 20th Century Women, Mozart in the Jungle). No soundtrack album has been announced. Also opening in New York before expanding to more markets over the next few weeks is the Australian drama Breath co-written and directed by Simon Baker and starring Samson Coulter, Ben Spence, Baker himself and Elizabeth Debicki. Harry Gregson-Williams (The Chronicles of NarniaThe MartianShrekKingdom of HeavenMan on Fire) has composed the film’s original music. Another limited release this week is the romantic drama All Summers End (previously entitled Grass Stains) written and directed by Kyle Wilamowski and starring Tye Sheridan, Kaitlyn Dever, Pablo Schreiber, Austin Abrams, Annabeth Gish, Ryan Lee, Paula Malcomson and Bill Sage. The film’s original score is composed by Joel P West (Short Term 12, Grandma, The Glass Castle). No soundtrack album has been released. The drama premiered at last year’s Santa Barbara Film Festival and is being released in theaters and on VOD by Gravitas Ventures.

Also opening in select U.S. theaters is the French biographical drama Rodin written and directed by Jacques Doillon and starring Vincent Lindon, Izia Higelin and Séverine Caneele. Philippe Sarde (TessThe TenantQuest for Fire) has composed the film’s original music. Cristal Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score.
