Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the comedy Life of the Party directed by Ben Falcone and starring Melissa McCarthy, Gillian Jacobs, Maya Rudolph, Julie Bowen, Matt Walsh, Molly Gordon, Stephen Root and Jacki Weaver. The film’s original score is composed by Fil Eisler (Empire, Revenge, How to Be Single, CHiPs). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as songs by Meghan Trainor, Blind Scuba Divers, Chick Norris, Cyndi Lauper & more. Also opening wide is the thriller Breaking In directed by James McTeigue and starring Gabrielle Union, Billy Burke, Richard Cabral, Seth Karr, Ajiona Alexus, Levi Meaden, Jason George and Christa Miller. Johnny Klimek (Cloud Atlas, Run Lola Run, One Hour Photo, Sense8, The International) has composed the film’s original score. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the music by Klimek and additional music composer Gabriel Mounsey and a song by James Earl Jones II. Opening in limited release is the drama The Seagull directed by Michael Mayer and starring Annette Bening, Saoirse Ronan, Corey Stoll, Billy Howle, Elisabeth Moss, Mare Winningham, Brian Dennehy, Jon Tenney, Glenn Fleshler and Michael Zegen. The film’s original music is composed by Nico Muhly (The Reader, Margaret, Howards End) and Anton Sanko (Rabbit Hole, The Possession, Big Love). No word on a soundtrack release. Also opening in limited release is the British drama Beast written and directed by Michael Pearce and starring Jessie Buckley, Johnny Flynn, Trystan Gravelle and Geraldine James. The film’s original music is composed by Jim Williams (Raw, Sightseers, Kill List, Down Terrace). No soundtrack album has been announced. Also opening in select theaters is the French thriller Revenge written and directed by Coralie Fargeat and stars Matilda Lutz and Kevin Janssens. Rob (Horns, Maniac, Amityville: The Awakening, Planetarium, Populaire) has composed the film’s original music. Music Box Records and Hippocampus have released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in select cities is the noir thriller Terminal written and directed by Vaughn Stein and starring Margot Robbie, Simon Pegg, Mike Myers, Max Irons and Dexter Fletcher. The film’s original music is composed by Rupert Greyson-Williams (Wonder Woman, Hacksaw Ridge, The Crown, The Legend of Tarzan, Over the Hedge) and Anthony Clarke. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which tells the story of two assassins carrying out a sinister mission, a teacher battling a fatal illness, an enigmatic janitor and a curious waitress leading a dangerous double life, is being released in theaters and on VOD by RLJE Films.
Another limited release this week is the coming-of-age drama Measure of a Man directed by Jim Loach and starring Blake Cooper, Donald Sutherland, Judy Greer, Luke Wilson, Danielle Rose Russell and Liana Liberato. Ilan Eshkeri (Stardust, Layer Cake, Kick-Ass, The Young Victoria, Coriolanus, Still Alice) and Tim Wheeler have composed the film’s original music. The drama, which follows a a bullied teen as he experiences a turning point summer in which he learns to stand up for himself, is being released by Great Point Media.
Also opening in limited release is the documentary Always at the Carlyle directed by Matthew Miele about Manhattan’s 87-year-old landmark and a residency for many prominent New Yorkers. The film’s original music is composed and conducted by Earl Rose (Mad Dog Time, Inventing L.A.: The Chandlers and Their Times, Stardust: The Bette Davis Story). Also opening in select cities is the British drama The Escape directed by Dominic Savage and starring Gemma Arterton, Dominic Cooper, Jalil Lespert, Frances Barber and Marthe Keller. Alexandra Harwood (The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society) and Anthony John have composed the film’s original music. The movie follows a housewife and mother suffocating under the weight of her domestic burdens who makes the extraordinary decision to abandon her family in order to find herself. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released in theaters and on VOD by IFC Films.
Also opening in select theaters is the Australian documentary Mountain directed by Jennifer Peedom and narrated by Willem Dafoe about the history of our timeless fascination with mountains. The film’s original music is composed by Richard Tognetti. ABC Australia has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as works by Chopin, Grieg, Vivaldi and Beethoven & others recorded for the movie and performed by the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
