Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the horror thriller Jigsaw directed by Peter & Michael Spierig and starring Matt Passmore, Callum Keith Rennie, Clé Bennett, Hannah Emily Anderson, Laura Vandervoort, Mandela Van Peebles, Paul Braunstein, Brittany Allen and Josiah Black. Charlie Clouser (Wayward Pines, Resident Evil: Extinction) who previously scored all movies in the Saw series has composed the film’s original music. Also opening wide is the comedy drama Suburbicon co-writtten and directed by Clooney and starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Noah Jupe and Oscar Isaac. The film’s original music is composed and conducted by Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). The third wide release this week is the drama Thank You for Your Service written and directed by Jason Hall and starring Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, Amy Schumer, Joe Cole, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Beulah Koale, Scott Haze, Brad Beyer, Omar J. Dorsey and Jayson Warner Smith. Thomas Newman (American Beauty, The Shawshank Redemption, Finding Nemo, Skyfall, Wall-E) has composed the film’s original music. The movie also features the song Freedom Cadence, which was arranged and performed for the film by Bruce Springsteen.
Opening in around 280 theaters is the psychological thriller All I See Is You co-written and directed by Marc Forster and starring Blake Lively, Jason Clarke, Ahna O’Reilly, Yvonne Strahovski, Wes Chatham and Danny Huston. The film’s original music is composed by Marc Streitenfeld (Robin Hood, Prometheus, American Gangster, The Grey). Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as songs by Lively, Ted Lucas, Depedro and Raphael Gualazzi. Also opening in limited release is the indie drama Novitiate written and directed by Maggie Betts and starring Margaret Qualley, Julianne Nicholson, Dianna Agron, Morgan Saylor and Melissa Leo. Christopher Stark has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie is set against the backdrop of Vatican II and follows a young woman who is called to a life in the seminary. The drama premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Sony Pictures Classics. Visit the official movie website for more information.
Also opening in select cities is the satire The Square written and directed by Ruben Östlund and starring Claes Bang, Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West and Terry Notary. The movie doesn’t feature an original score. Rasmus Thord is the project’s music supervisor. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring tracks by Justice, Bobby McFerrin, Curbi, Amok, Claes Bang, Andreas Franck & more. Also opening in select theaters is the drama God’s Own Country written and directed by Francis Lee and starring Josh O’Connor, Alec Secareanu, Gemma Jones and Ian Hart. The film’s original music is composed by Dustin O’Halloran (Lion, Transparent, Like Crazy) and Adam Wiltzie aka A Winged Victory for the Sullen. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. The drama, which revolves around a young farmer in Yorkshire, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Samuel Goldwyn Films. Click here for more information.
Another limited release is the action thriller Acts of Vengeance directed by Isaac Florentine and starring Antonio Banderas, Karl Urban, Paz Vega, Robert Forster and Johnathon Schaech. Frederik Wiedmann (Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Dying of the Light, Intruders, Field of Lost Shoes) has composed the film’s original music. The thriller follows a fast-talking lawyer who transforms his body and takes a vow of silence, not to be broken until he finds out who killed his wife and daughter and has his revenge. The movie is being released by Saban Films.
Also opening in limited release is the comedy Crash Pad directed by Kevin Tent, produced by Alexander Payne and starring Domhnall Gleeson, Thomas Haden Church, Christina Applegate and Nina Dobrev. The film’s original music is composed by Rolfe Kent (Sideways, Wedding Crashers, Election, Up in the Air). The movie, which follows a hopeless romantic, who thinks he’s found true love with an older woman, learns that she’s married and that the fling is merely an instrument of revenge against her neglectful husband. The comedy is being released by Vertical Entertainment.
Also opening in select theaters is the horror thriller Amityville: The Awakening written and directed by Franck Khalfoun and starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bella Thorne, Cameron Monaghan, Thomas Mann, Jennifer Morrison and Kurtwood Smith. Rob (Horns, Maniac, Populaire, Planetarium) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The thriller, which follows a single mother who moves her three children into the haunted house, is being released by Dimension Films following a digital release earlier this month on Google Play.
Also opening in limited release following a release on Netflix earlier this month is the horror thriller Gerald’s Game directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Henry Thomas, Carel Struycken, Kate Siegel and Chiara Aurelia. The film’s original music is composed by The Newton Brothers (Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Life of Crime, Detachement). The movie based on the Stephen King novel of the same title is now also available to stream on Netflix.
