Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the action thriller Jason Bourne directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel and Tommy Lee Jones. The film’s original music is composed by John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon, Happy Feet) who previously scored the first original three films in the series and David Buckley (The Good Wife, The Nice Guys, The Forbidden Kingdom). Also opening wide is the comedy Bad Moms written and directed by Jon Lucas & Scott Moore and starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Jay Hernandez, Clark Duke, Annie Mumolo, Jada Pinkett Smith and Christina Applegate. Christopher Lennertz (Horrible Bosses, Ride Along) has composed the film’s original music and collaborated with singer/songwriter KT Tunstall on his score. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack album featuring three tracks from the composer’s score, as well as songs by Janelle Monáe, Demi Lovato, Foreigner, Icona Pop feat. Already playing nationwide since this past Wednesday is the thriller Nerve directed by Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman and starring Emma Roberts, Dave Franco, Emily Meade, Miles Heizer, Juliette Lewis and Kimiko Glenn. The film’s original music is composed by Rob Simonsen (Foxcatcher, (500) Days of Summer, The Spectacular Now). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the song Let’s Play performed by White Sea. Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to more markets within the next couple of weeks is the indie drama Indignation written and directed by James Schamus and starring Logan Lerman, Sarah Gadon, Tracy Letts, Linda Emond, Danny Burstein and Ben Rosenfield. The film’s original music is composed by Jay Wadley. Nettwerk has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Is It Love written by the composer & Schamus and performed by Jane Monheit. Also opening in limited release is the documentary Gleason directed by Clay Tweel about the life of Steve Gleason, the former New Orleans Saints defensive back who, at the age of 34, was diagnosed with ALS. Dan Romer (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Beasts of No Nation, Digging for Fire) and Saul Simon MacWilliams (Jim: The James Foley Story) have composed the film’s original music. Also opening in select theaters is the indie drama Equity directed by Meera Menon and starring Anna Gunn, James Purefoy, Sarah Megan Thomas and Alysia Reiner. The film’s original music is composed by Alexis & Sam (Animal Kingdom, Lila & Eve, We’ll Never Have Paris). No soundtrack album has been announced. Equity follows a female investment banker who is threatened by a financial scandal and must untangle a web of corruption. Also opening in select cities is the indie drama The Land directed by Steven Caple Jr. and starring Erykah Badu, Michael Kenneth Williams, Jorge Lendeborg Jr, Moises Arias, Rafi Gavron, Ezri Walker, Kim Coates, Linda Emond, Natalie Martinez and Colson Bake. Jongnic Bontemps has composed the film’s original music. Mass Appeal Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by artists including Nas (who is also a producer on the movie), Kanye West, French Montana, Pusha T, Jeremih, Machine Gun Kelly & more. Also opening in select theaters is the Chinese action fantasy adventure League of Gods directed by Koan Xu and starring Jet Li, Fan Bingbing, Louis Koo, Angelababy, Andy On and Xu Qing. The film’s original music is composed by John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, The Jungle Book, Elf, Iron Man 2, Bruce Almighty). A soundtrack release is in the works. Another limited release this week is the indie drama Into the Forest written and directed by Patricia Rozem and starring Ellen Page, Evan Rachel Wood, Max Minghella, Callum Keith Rennie and Michael Eklund. Max Richter (The Leftovers, Testament of Youth, Disconnect, Waltz with Bashir) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. Into the Forest follows two courageous sisters and their loving father who must fight to survive when a global blackout suddenly plunges the world into complete chaos. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released by A24 Films.
Opening in select theaters while also premiering simultaneously on Netflix is the indie drama Tallulah written and directed by Sian Heder and starring Ellen Page, Allison Janney, Tammy Blanchard, Evan Jonigkeit and Uzo Aduba. The film’s original music is composed by Michael Brook (Brooklyn, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Into the Wild, The Fighter). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as songs by Jim Murphy & The Accents, Jesus Sons and Ted Lucas. Also opening in limited release is the horror thriller Viral directed by Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman and starring Analeigh Tipton, Sofia Black-D’Elia and Michael Kelly. Rob Simonsen who also scored this week’s release Nerve for the same directors has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album is available. Viral follows two women who are put to the test to survive a city-wide quarantine when their county succumbs to the spread of a parasitic virus. The thriller is being released today in theaters and on VOD by the Weinstein Company’s Dimension Films.
Also opening in limited release is the documentary Miss Sharon Jones! directed by Barbara Kopple about R&B queen Sharon Jones as he battles a cancer diagnosis and struggles to hold her band together. Daptone Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by Jones & The Dap-Kings on August 19.
