Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the holiday comedy Love the Coopers directed by Jessie Nelson and starring Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Ed Helms, Diane Keaton, Jake Lacy, Anthony Mackie, Amanda Seyfried, June Squibb, Marisa Tomei and Olivia Wilde. The film’s original score is composed by Nick Urata (Crazy, Stupid, Love, Paddington). Republic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Otis Redding, Sixpence None the Richer, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, as well as track from the score. Also opening wide is the drama The 33 directed by Patricia Riggen and starring Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche, James Brolin, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bob Gunton and Gabriel Byrne. James Horner (Titanic, Braveheart, Avatar, The Amazing Spider-Man) has composed the film’s original music. The movie is also dedicated to the late composer. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring Horner’s score, as well as two songs by Cote de Pablo and Los Bunkers last week. Also opening wide is the sports drama My All American written and directed by Angelo Pizzo and starring Aaron Eckhart, Finn Wittrock, Robin Tunney, Sarah Bolger, Alex MacNicoll and Michael Reilly Burke. The film’s original music is composed by John Paesano (The Maze Runner, Daredevil, When the Game Stands Tall). Opening in limited release is the drama By the Sea directed by Angelina Jolie and starring herself, alongside Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Melvil Poupaud, Niels Arestrup and Richard Bohringer. Gabriel Yared (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, In the Land of Blood and Honey) has composed the film’s original music. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie by Serge Gainsbourg, Jacques Dutronc, Jane Birkin, Chantal Goya & more. Also opening in limited release is the indie comedy Entertainment co-written and directed by Rick Alverson and starring Gregg Turkington, Tye Sheridan, Michael Cera, John C. Reilly, Lotte Verbeek, Amy Seimetz and Dean Stockwell. The film’s original score is composed by Robert Donne (Hide Your Smiling Faces). Numero Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Pompeo Stillo & The Companions, Bill Moss, The Extensions, Frank Sinatra, Jr, Insight Out, as well as dialogue clips from the movie. Also opening in select theaters is the comedy Man Up directed by Ben Palmer and starring Simon Pegg, Lake Bell, Rory Kinnear, Ken Stott, Harriet Walter, Olivia Williams and Sharon Horgan. Dickon Hinchliffe (Locke, Winter’s Bone, Out of the Furnace) has composed the film’s original score. Fiction Records has released a soundtrack album featuring three tracks from the composer, as well as songs by Elbow, The B-52’s, The Nationals, Duran Duran, Whitesnake, Aaron Neville & more. Also opening in select cities is the documentary Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans directed by Gabriel Clarke & John McKenna about the making of McQueen’s passion project film about the Le Mans 24-hour car race. The film’s original music is composed by Jim Copperthwaite. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the music for the 1971 film Le Mans composed by Michel Legrand. Another limited release this week is the indie drama Shelter written and directed by Paul Bettany and starring Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Mackie, Amy Hargreaves and Scott Johnsen. UNKLE’s James Lavelle has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Shelter follows two people from very different worlds who find strength and solace in each other while being homeless on the streets of New York. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released in theaters and on VOD by Screen Media Films. Visit the official movie website for more information.
Also opening in limited release is the documentary Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words directed by Stig Bjorkmanm, narrated by Alicia Vikander about actress Ingrid Bergman (Notorious, Casablanca). The film’s original music is composed by Michael Nyman (The Piano, Gattaca, The End of the Affair). The composer’s record label has released Nyman’s original score this summer when the movie opened overseas. Also opening in select theaters is the thriller Heist directed by Scott Mann and starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Robert De Niro, Kate Bosworth, Gina Carano, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, D.B. Sweeney, Lydia Hull, Tyler J. Olson, Morris Chestnut and Dave Bautista. James Edward Barker and Tim Despic have composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. Heist follows two men whose attempt to rob a casino fails and forces them to flee on foot and hijack city Bus 657 and take the passengers hostage. The thriller is being released in theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate Premiere.
Also opening in select cities is the indie drama James White written and directed by Josh Mond and starring Christopher Abbott , Cynthia Nixon, Makenzie Leigh, Scott Cohen, Ron Livingston and David Call. The film’s original music is composed by Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi who also appears in the movie. No soundtrack album has been announced. James White follows a New York slacker careening out of control as his mother battles cancer. The drama premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by The Film Arcade.
