Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Guaranteed to top the weekend box office is Disney’s live-action adaptation of Cinderella directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, Stellan Skarsgard, Holliday Grainger, Sophie McShera, Derek Jacobi and Helena Bonham-Carter. The film’s original music is composed by Patrick Doyle (Sense and Sensibility, Thor, Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well the film’s songs including the original end titles track Strong written by Doyle, Branagh & Tommy Danvers and performed by Sonna Rele. Playing in front of Cinderella is Disney’s new animated short Frozen Fever directed by Jennifer Lee & Chris Buck and featuring the voices of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad. Christophe Beck (Edge of Tomorrow, The Muppets, The Hangover) who scored 2013’s feature has also composed the score for the short film, while Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez have contributed a new original song. Also opening wide is the crime thriller Run All Night directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Liam Neeson, Joel Kinnaman, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ed Harris, Bruce McGill, Genesis Rodriguez, Boyd Holbrook, Holt McCallany and Common. The film’s original music is composed by Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL (Divergent, Mad Max: Fury Road, 300: Rise of an Empire). Opening in limited release is the horror thriller It Follows written and directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Olivia Luccardi and Lili Sepe. The film’s original music is composed by Rich Vreeland aka Disasterpeace. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the movie’s original score digitally earlier this week. Also opening in select cities is the drama Cymbeline written and directed by Michael Almereyda and starring Ethan Hawke, Ed Harris, Milla Jovovich, John Leguizamo, Penn Badgley, Dakota Johnson, Anton Yelchin, Peter Gerety, Kevin Corrigan and Vondie Curtis-Hall. Classical music composer David Ludwig has composed the film’s original music and has made his film scoring debut on the project. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Cymbeline is a modern take on the Shakespeare play of the same title and portrays a battle between dirty cops and a biker gang set against the backdrop of a corruption-riddled 21st century America. The movie premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and is being released in select theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate.
Another limited release is the comedy drama The Cobbler directed by Tom McCarthy and starring Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi, Ellen Barkin, Dustin Hoffman, Dan Stevens and Cliff “Method Man” Smith. The film’s original music is composed by John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2, Elf) and Nick Urata (Paddington, Crazy, Stupid, Love, Focus). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ music, as well as the song Step Into My Shoes by Arlan Feiles. Also opening in select theaters is the French drama 3 Hearts directed by Benoît Jacquot and starring Benoît Poelvoorde, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Chiara Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve. Bruno Coulais (Coraline, Song of the Sea, The Crimson Rivers, The Chorus) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. 3 Hearts follows a tax official who meets a woman in a provincial town after missing the last train back to Paris and they start wandering the streets until morning, talking about everything – except themselves. The drama premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and was picked up by Cohen Media Group for a domestic release. Visit the official movie website to learn more about the film.
Also opening in limited release is the romantic adventure The Lovers directed by Roland Joffe and starring Josh Hartnett, Tamsin Egerton, Alice Englert and Claire van der Boom. The film’s original music is composed by Dirk Brosse (Paradise’s End). No soundtrack album has been released. The Lovers follows a marine archaeologist who is left brain dead after a dangerous dive to save his wife while exploring an 18th century merchant ship wreckage. Another limited release this weekend is the comedy Home Sweet Hell directed by Anthony Burns and starring Katherine Heigl, Patrick Wilson, Jordana Brewster, Kevin McKidd, AJ Buckley and Jim Belushi. Country singer/songwriter Josh Kelley has composed the film’s original score and made his film scoring debut on the project. No word on a soundtrack release. Home Sweet Home follows a businessman whose life would be perfect if it weren’t for his domineering wife controlling his every move. The comedy is being released by Vertical Entertainment.
