Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the action war drama Fury written and directed by David Ayer and starring Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, Jon Bernthal, Jason Isaacs and Scott Eastwood. The film’s original music is composed by Steven Price (Gravity, Attack the Block, The World’s End). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Also opening wide is the animated feature The Book of Life directed by Jorge Gutierrez, produced by Guillermo del Toro and featuring the voices of Channing Tatum, Zoë Saldana, Diego Luna, Ice Cube, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, Danny Trejo and Cheech Martin. Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, August: Osage County) has composed the film’s original score. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack album featuring selections from the composer’s music, as well as the songs from the film, including original tracks by performed by Jesse & Joy and La Santa Cecilia. The third wide release of the week is the romantic drama The Best of Me based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, directed by Michael Hoffman and starring James Marsden, Michelle Monaghan, Luke Bracey and Liana Liberato. EMI Nashville has released a soundtrack album featuring the film’s songs by artists including Hunter Hayes, David Nail, Colbie Caillat, Kip Moore, as well as the original track I Did With You by Lady Antebellum. Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to more markets is the comedy drama Birdman directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts. The film’s original drum score is composed by Antonio Sanchez. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the drummer’s music, as well as the classical pieces featured in the movie by Gustav Mahler, Maurice Ravel, Sergei Rachmaninov and John Adams. Also opening in select cities is the indie comedy Dear White People written and directed by Justin Simien and starring Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, Brandon P. Bell, Kyle Gallner and Dennis Haysbert. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the film’s songs by artists such as Hopsin, Kilo Kish, Andy Allo, Starchild & The New Romantic, Caught a Ghost, BC Kingdom & more. Also opening in limited release is the indie drama Camp X-Ray written and directed by Peter Sattle and starring Kristen Stewart, Payman Maadi, John Carroll Lynch, Lane Garrison, Joseph Julian Soria and Cory Michael Smith. The film’s original music is composed by Jess Stroup (Cardboard Boxer). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally earlier this week and a physical version is set to be released next month. Another limited release this week is actor William H. Macy’s directorial debut Rudderless starring himself, alongside Billy Crudup, Anton Yelchin, Selena Gomez, Felicity Huffman and Laurence Fishburne. Eef Barzelay has composed the film’s original score. Also opening in select theaters is the indie sci-fi drama Young Ones written and directed by Jake Paltrow and starring Michael Shannon, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Aimee Mullins and Alex McGregor. The film’s original music is composed by Nathan Johnson (Looper, Brick, Kill the Messenger, Don Jon, The Brothers Bloom). Cut Narrative Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this month. Also opening in limited release is the horror thriller The Town That Dreaded Sundown directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, produced by Ryan Murphy & Jason Blum and starring Addison Timlin, Travis Trope, Veronica Cartwright, Gary Cole, Denis O’Hare and Joshua Leonard. Ludwig Goransson (Community, Fruitvale Station, Top Five, New Girl) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The Town That Dreaded Sundown based on the 70s cult film follows the recreation of the Texarkana Moonlight Murders after a mysterious killer attempts to remake the events over 60 years later. The thriller is being released by Orion Pictures.
Also opening in select cities is the indie thriller Felony directed by Matthew Saville and starring Tom Wilkinson, Joel Edgerton, Jai Courtney and Melissa George. The film’s original music is composed by Bryony Marks (Noise, Dance Academy). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week.
