Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

the-lego-movieExpected to top the weekend box office is the animated feature The Lego Movie directed by Phil Lord & Chris Miller and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Liam Neeson, Alison Brie, Nick Offerman, Charlie Day and Morgan Freeman. Mark Mothersbaugh who previously scored Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street for the directors has composed the film’s original music. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Everything Is AWESOME!!! by Tegan and Sara featuring The Lonely Island. monuments-menAlso opening wide is the historical drama The Monuments Men directed by George Clooney who also stars in the film alongside Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville and John Goodman. Alexandre Desplat (The King’s SpeechArgoThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button) has composed the film’s original music and also has a cameo appearance in the movie. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. vampire-academyThe third wide release of the week is the young adult novel film adaptation of Vampire Academy directed by Mark Waters and starring Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Danila Kozlovsky,  Sarah Hyland, Gabriel Byrne, Olga Kurylenko, Sami Gayle, Cameron Monaghan, Joely Richardson and Dominic Sherwood. Rolfe Kent (SidewaysUp in the Air) who previously collaborated with the director on films including Mean Girls and Freaky Friday has composed the movie’s original score. No word yet on a score release. Universal Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Katy Perry, Goldfrapp, Iggy Azalea, Sky Ferreira and Naughty Boy, as well the end credits song Bella Lugosi is Dead by CHVRCHES. nurse-3dOpening in limited release is the horror film Nurse 3D directed by Doug Aarniokoski and starring Paz de la Huerta, Katrina Bowden, Corbin Bleu, Judd Nelson, Boris Kodjoe, Adam Herschman, Niecy Nash and Martin Donovan. The film’s original music is composed by Anton Sanko (The PossessionBig Love, Rabbit Hole). No word yet on a soundtrack album. Nurse 3D follows a nurse who uses her sexuality to indulge a sinister side that finds her punishing dishonest men. The film is also being released on VOD today. after-the-darkAlso opening in limited release is the sci-fi thriller After the Dark written and directed by John Huddle and starring James D’Arcy, Sophie Lowe, Daryl Sabara and Bonnie Wright. Nicholas O’Toole and Korn frontman Jonathan Davis (Queen of the Damned) have composed the film’s original music. Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score, as well as additional music by Glen Phillips of Toad The Wet Sprocket digitally on February 11 and physically on March 4. pretty-oneOpening in  New York before expanding to other cities is the indie romantic comedy The Pretty One written and directed by Jenée LaMarque and starring Zoe Kazan, Jake Johnson, Ron Livingston, John Carroll Lynch and Frankie Shaw. The film’s original music is composed by Julian Wass (Hit & RunNoah’s Ark: Jumping the BroomThe Freebie). No soundtrack album has been announced. The Pretty One follows a young woman who is mistaken for her dead “perfect” identical twin and seizes the chance to masquerade as her sister. The comedy premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released by DADA Films. welcome-to-the-jungleAnother limited release this week is the comedy Welcome to the Jungle directed by Rob Meltzer and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Adam Brody, Rob Huebel, Kristen Schaal, Megan Boone and Dennis Haysbert. Karl Preusser has composed the film’s original music. MovieScore Media and Kronos Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally on February 11 and physically on February 25. fantastic-fearAlso opening in select markets is the British comedy A Fantastic Fear of Everything directed by Crispian Mills and Chris Hopewell and starring Simon Pegg, Amara Karan, Clare Higgins, Sheridan Smith and Alan Drake. Michael Price (Sherlock) has composed the film’s original score. Strangefolk Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the film’s main theme composed by the composer, as well as dialogue/music clips featuring the movie’s cast and the songs from the film including The Pretty Things’ I See You and Europe’s The Final Countdown. cavemenAlso opening in limited release is the indie romantic comedy Cavemen written and directed by Herschel Faber and starring Skylar Astin, Camilla Belle, Chad Michael Murray, Alexis Knapp, Dayo Okeniyi and Kenny Wormald. The film’s original score is composed by Ronen Landa (The Pact). No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Cavemen follows an LA playboy who is fed up with one-night-stands and empty relationships and decides to try his hand at finding true love for the first time.
