Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

white-house-downOpening in most theaters is the action thriller White House Down directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, James Woods, Richard Jenkins, Joey King and Rachelle Lefevre. The film’s music is composed by Thomas Wander and Harald Kloser (2012, 10’000 B.C., The Day After Tomorrow). A soundtrack album featuring the composers’ music was released digitally today and will be coming out on CD on July 23. the-heatAlso opening wide is the buddy cop comedy The Heat directed by Paul Feig and starring Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy, Demian Bichir, Marlon Wayans and Michael Rapaport. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album earlier this week featuring the songs from the film by artists including LCD Soundsytem, Santigold, Kimbra, The Isley Brothers, Angel Haze, Parliament, Azealia Banks, Ted Nugent, Boston and Kreayshawn. im-so-excitedOpening in limited release is the Spanish comedy I’m So Excited! directed by Pedro Almadovar and starring Javier Cámara, Cecilia Roth, Lola Dueñas, Raul Arévalo, Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre, Hugo Silva, Willy Toledo, Miguel Ángel Silvestre and special appearances by Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Paz Vega. The film’s original music is composed by the director’s regular musical collaborator Alberto Iglesias (The Kite Runner, The Constant Gardener). Quartet Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as classic song I’m So Excited by the Pointer Sisters. copperheadAlso opening in select markets is the Civil War drama Copperhead directed by Ron Maxwell (Gettysburg, Gods and Generals) and starring Billy Campbell, Angus MacFadyen and Peter Fonda. The film’s original music is composed and conducted by Laurent Eyquem (Winnie). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. The album is now available digitally and will be released on CD next month. byzantiumAlso opening in limited release is the supernatural drama Byzantium directed by Neil Jordan and starring Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley, Jonny Lee Miller and Caleb Landry Jones. Academy Award-nominated composer Javier Navarrete (Pan’s Labyrinth, Wrath of the Titans) has composed the film’s original music. Silva Screen Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. The album is available digitally in the US and also on CD overseas. hummingbirdAlso opening in select cities is the thriller Redemption directed by Steven Knight (screenwriter of Eastern Promises) and starring Jason Statham, Vicky McClure, Ian Pirie and Agata Buzeri. The film’s original score is composed by Academy Award-winning composer Dario Marianelli (Atonement, Anna Karenina, Pride and Prejudice). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music has been released overseas (where the film is entitled Hummingbird) by Metropolis Movie Music. No word yet on a domestic release. some-girlsAnother limited release this week is the indie comedy drama Some Girl(s) directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer and starring Adam Brody, Kristen Bell, Zoe Kazan, Mia Maestro, Jennifer Morrison and Emily Watson. The film’s original score is composed by David Carbonara (Mad MenVegas). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie is based on a play by Neil LaBute and follows a successful writer who, on the eve of his wedding, travels across the country to meet up with ex-lovers in an attempt to make amends for past relationship transgressions.
