Columbia Records will release a score album for the indie comedy drama The Way, Way Back. The album features the film’s original music composed by Rob Simonsen (500 Days of Summer, Dollhouse, The Spectacular Now). The soundtrack will be released on July 19, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips from the score after the jump. The label has previously released a soundtrack featuring the songs from the film, as well as a track from Simonsen’s score. The Way, Way Back is directed by Jim Rash and Nat Faxon and stars Liam James, Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Allison Janney, AnnaSophia Robb, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph, Amanda Peet and Rob Corddry. The movie about a teen boy who struggles to find himself as he comes to terms with his mother and cheating stepfather during summer vacation was picked up by Fox Searchlight following its Sundance debut earlier this year and is now playing in theaters.

Three new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Already in theaters since Wednesday is the animated film sequel Despicable Me 2 directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud and featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand, Ken Jeong, Steve Coogan and Benjamin Bratt. Pharrell Williams has written the movie’s original songs and themes and Heitor Pereira (The Smurfs) has composed the film’s original score. Also opening wide is Walt Disney Pictures’ western The Lone Ranger directed by Gore Verbinski, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and starring Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter. The film’s original score is composed and produced by Hans Zimmer. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. The soundtrack will be released on July 2, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The movie about a teen boy who struggles to find himself as he comes to terms with his unattentive mother and cheating stepfather during summer vacation premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where it was acquired by Fox Searchlight for a theatrical release on July 5.
Rob Simonsen Scoring ‘The Way, Way Back’
Rob Simonsen has been hired to score the indie comedy The Way, Way Back. The film marks the directorial debut of Jim Rash and Nat Faxon and stars Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Sam Rockwell, AnnaSophia Robb, Allison Janney and Amanda Peet. The movie follows a teen boy who struggles to find himself as he comes to terms with his unattentive mother and cheating stepfather during summer vacation. Rash and Faxon who received an Academy Award for writing last year’s The Descendants have penned the screenplay. Kevin Walsh is producing through his production company and Tom Rice is producing for Sycamore Pictures. It has just been announced that The Way, Way Back will be premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
