Columbia Records has announced a soundtrack album for the indie comedy drama Dope. The soundtrack is curated by Grammy winner and Oscar nominee Pharrell Williams who wrote and produced the original songs performed by the three main characters of the movie and their band Awreeoh. Also included are rap and hip-hop classics by artists including Digital Underground, Naughty By Nature, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Public Enemy & more. The soundtrack will be released on June 16, 2015 and is now available for pre-order on iTunes. Dope is written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa and stars Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons, Kimberly Elise, A$AP Rocky, Blake Anderson, Keith Stanfield, Chanel Iman, Quincy Brown and Zoë Kravitz.

‘Paddington’ to Feature Original Song by Pharell Williams & Gwen Stefani
The Weinstein Company/Dimension announced that Pharrell Williams and Gwen Stefani have co-written and recorded the original song Shine for the upcoming family adventure Paddington. The song is only featured in the U.S. version of the film, which opens nationwide on January 16, 2015 and will receive an awards-qualifying release later this year. Decca Records will release a soundtrack album featuring Nick Urata’s original score, as well as the songs from the film overseas. Check out our previous article for the full album details. Paddington based on the best-selling book series by Michael Bond is directed by Paul King and stars Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington, as well as Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Nicole Kidman and Jim Broadbent.
Alexandre Desplat Named Film Composer of the Year at World Soundtrack Awards 2014
Alexandre Desplat was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2014 at the World Soundtrack Awards 2012, tonight’s closing event of the 41st Ghent Film Festival. Desplat also received an award for his score for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel in the Best Original Film Score of the Year category. Desplat also composed the music for such films as Gareth Edward’s Godzilla, George Clooney’s The Monuments Men and Stephen Frears’ Philomena over the past year. The composer previously was named Film Composer of the Year in 2007, 2009 and 2011. In the Discovery of the Year category, Daniel Pemberton was awarded for his work over the last year, which included his scores for Ridley Scott’s The Counselor and the comedy Cuban Fury. In the Best Original Song category, Pharrell Williams was honored for his Oscar-nominated song Happy from Despicable Me 2.
Ennio Morricone to Receive Star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame
The Walk of Fame Selection Committee announced today that Ennio Morricone is among the 30 honorees to receive a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame in 2015. He was selected to receive a star for his live performances on stage. The Italian composer who is known for such scores as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Untouchables and The Mission will be one of roughly a dozen film composers receiving the honor. Previous honorees include Elmer Bernstein, Alfred Newman, Bill Conti, Maurice Jarre, Henry Mancini, Max Steiner, Victor Young, Les Baxter, Ernest Gold, Alan Menken, Randy Newman and Hans Zimmer.
Hans Zimmer, Pharell Williams & Woodkid to Compose Music for JR’s Next Film Project
French artist JR has announced on Instagram (via Complex) that Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams and Woodkid will be composing the music for his next film project. No details of the movie have been announced yet. Woodkid has previously collaborated with JR on the ballet Les bosquets. Zimmer and Williams have most recently worked together on the soundtrack for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as well as Williams’ record G I R L. JR has previously the 2010 French documentary Women Are Heroes and was also the subject of last year’s doc Inside Out, which featured a score by composers including Antonio Pinto and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. More details about JR’s latest movie will be posted on this page as they are announced.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has published a video featurette on the music for the superhero sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The video features footage from the score’s recording sessions and interviews with the film’s composer Hans Zimmer, as well as some of his collaborators including Pharrell Williams, Johnny Marr and director Marc Webb. The details of the soundtrack album for the super hero sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 have been revealed. The album features the film’s original score composed by Hans Zimmer and The Magnificent Six, which features Pharrell Williams, Johnny Marr (of The Smiths, Modest Mouse), Michael Einziger (of Incubus), Junkie XL, Andrew Kawczynski and Steve Mazzaro. Also included is the original song It’s On Again by Alicia Keys feat. Kendrick Lamar, as well as songs by Pharrell Williams, Liz, Phosphorescent and The Neighbourhood. The composer has created a super band for the project that features Pharrell Williams, Johnny Marr (of The Smiths, Modest Mouse), Michael Einziger (of Incubus), Junkie XL, Andrew Kawczynski and Steve Mazzaro. Also included is the original song It’s On Again by Alicia Keys featuring Kendrick Lamar, written Williams, Keys, Zimmer & Lamar. Also featured on the album are new songs by Williams, The Neighbourhood, LIZ and Alvin Risk, as well as Phosphorescent’s Song for Zula. The soundtrack will be released on April 22, 2014. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences and ABC have published some of the music-related highlights of the 86th Academy Awards ceremony online. Check out the acceptance speeches of Steven Price who won the Oscar for his music for Gravity and Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Bobby Lopez who won the award for the song Let It Go from Frozen after the jump. Also embedded are the live performances of the songs Let It Go by Idina Menzel, Ordinary Love by U2, Happy by Pharrell Williams and The Moon Song by Karen O. Pharrell Williams to Perform ‘Despicable Me 2’ Song on the Oscars
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced today that Pharrell Williams will be performing his original song Happy from the animated hit film Despicable Me 2 at this year’s Oscars show, which will air on March 2. Williams is nominated for the first time in the Best Original Song category. The other nominated songs include Ordinary Love from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Let It Go from Frozen and The Moon Song from Her. Despicable Me 2 is also nominated in the Best Animated Feature category. The soundtrack for the film, which also includes more songs by Pharrell and the score by Heitor Pereira is available on Back Lot Music.
