The movie is based on a novel by Nathaniel Philbrick and follows a whaling ship that is preyed upon by a sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home. Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond, K-Pax) has adapted the material for the screen. Howard’s producing partner Brian Grazer, Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Huntsman), Paula Weinstein (The Perfect Storm, Blood Diamond) and William Ward are producing the Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow production.
