Today, BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc) announced its 36th annual Film, TV & Visual Media Awards celebrating the top-performing composers in film, TV and visual media of the previous year. Among the honorees, which were revealed across BMI’s social media and digital platforms, are Hildur Guðnadóttir who received two BMI awards for her work on Todd Phillips’ Joker, for which she previously won an Academy Award, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe and GRAMMY Award. Icelandic composer Atli Örvarsson received the most awards this year with a total of five crystals for his work on NBC’s Chicago P.D., Chicago Med, and Chicago Fire, as well as the CBS crime dramas FBI and FBI Most Wanted. Three composers were honored with three awards: Brian Tyler for Hawaii Five-0, Magnum P.I. and Yellowstone, Mac Quayle for 9-1-1 , 9-1-1: Lone Star and American Horror Story, and Tyler Bates for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Netflix’s The Punisher.

BMI to Present 22nd Annual Composer/Director Roundtable at 2020 Sundance Film Festival
Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) has announced the line-up for the 22nd annual Composer/Director Roundtable and 18th annual Snowball Showcase during the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. BMI’s roundtable entitled Music & Film: The Creative Process will take place on Sunday, January 26, 2020 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Kimball Arts Center (1401 Kearns Blvd, Park City). The conversation will be moderated by Doreen Ringer-Ross, BMI’s Vice President of Creative Relations and focuses on the relationship between composer and director. Participants will discuss what goes into producing a successful film score.

Terence Blanchard was named BMI Icon in recognition of his significant contributions to the cinematic community. The composer who received his first Academy Award nomination earlier this year for his music for Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and whose other scoring credits include Malcolm X, Inside Man and Red Tails was presented the award by the evening’s hosts, BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations, Doreen Ringer-Ross and BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill.

The composer whose film scoring credits include Malcolm X, Inside Man, 25th Hour and Red Tails has received his first Academy Award nomination earlier this year for his music for Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. Past BMI Icon honorees include Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard, Alexandre Desplat, Rachel Portman, David Newman, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman, Harry Gregson-Williams and John Williams, among many others.

John Williams was honored with the John Williams Award for his incomparable status as one of the greatest film and television composers of our time. The composer who was previously honored with BMI’s Kirk Award in 1999 and who also received two more BMI Awards this year for his scores for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Post was presented the award by the evening’s host, BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations, Doreen Ringer-Ross and BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill.
John Williams to Be Honored at BMI Film, TV & Visual Media Awards
BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) announced today that it will present legendary film composer John Williams with a special award bearing his name in recognition of his incomparable status as one of the greatest film and television composers of our time. The John Williams Award will be presented for the first time at the 34th annual BMI Film, TV & Visual Media Awards on Wednesday, May 9 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. Williams previously received the organization’s The Kirk Award in 1999, which later became the BMI Icon Award, for composing some of the most popular and recognizable scores in cinematic history such as the Star Wars series, Jaws, Schindler’s List, the Indiana Jones series, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, among many others.
