Jan Kaczmarek is scoring the upcoming drama Leonie. The film is directed by Hisako Matsui and stars Emily Mortimer and Christina Hendricks. The international co-production centers on the life and relationships of the early 20th American educator, editor, and journalist Leonie Gilmour, the mother of the acclaimed artist and architect Isamu Noguchi. Leonie will be released in Japan this fall and no release plans in the US have been announced.

Brian Reitzell has recently co-scored the dramedy Beginners with Roger Neill and Dave Palmer. The movie directed by Mike Mills (Thumbsucker) stars Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent. Beginners tells the story of a man who learns that his terminally ill father is gay and has a young lover. The film premiered at this year’s Toronto Film Festival and has recently been picked up by Focus Features for a release in 2011.
As reported earlier, Reitzell also has the Catherine Hardwicke-directed Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman coming out in early 2011.
Burwell to score HBO mini-series

Carter Burwell has been hired to score the upcoming HBO mini-series Mildred Pierce. The five part series is directed by Todd Haynes (I’m Not There, Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine) and follows a divorced single mom who decides to open a restaurant business, which tears at the already-strained relationship with her her ambitious elder daughter. Mildred Pierce stars Kate Winslet, Evan Rachel Wood and Guy Pearce. The project marks Burwell’s first TV mini-series and second collaboration with HBO after the 1993 drama And The Band Played On. Debney to take over Yogi Bear

John Debney has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming family movie Yogi Bear. He is replacing Andrew Lockington, who was originally slated to score the movie. Lockington scored director Eric Brevig’s previous movie Journey to the Center of the Earth back in 2008. In Yogi Bear, a documentary filmmaker travels to Jellystone Park to shoot a project and soon crosses paths with Yogi Bear, his sidekick Boo-Boo, and Ranger Smith. Terence Blanchard is scoring the martial arts action pic Bunraku. The film stars Josh Harnett, Ron Perlman, Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore. The movie is directed by Guy Moshe who made his feature directing debut on 2006’s drama Holly. Bunraku tells the story of a young man who has spent his life searching for revenge only to find himself up against a bigger challenge than he originally bargained for. The film is set to premiere at this year’s Toronto Film Festival. No information yet on a release date for the movie.
Henry Jackman to score X-Men: First Class

Film Music Reporter has learned that Henry Jackman has been hired to score the upcoming comic book adaptation X-Men: First Class. The project reunites Jackman with director Matthew Vaughn after their collaboration on Kick-Ass earlier this year (which the composer scored alongside John Murphy, Ilan Eshkeri and Marius DeVries). X-Men: First Class tells the origin story of the characters of the X-Men series including Magneto and Professor X. The movie is expected to start shooting soon for a June 3, 2011 release date. The film’s cast includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence and Rosamunde Pike. Jackman follows Michael Kamen, John Ottman, John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams as the fifth composer scoring a movie in the X-Men series.

Anton Sanko has recently finished work on the score for the upcoming drama Rabbit Hole. Film Music Reporter has learned that David Holmes has been hired to score the graphic novel adaptation Red. The movie is directed by Robert Schwentke (Flightplan, The Time Traveler’s Wife) and stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich and Richard Dreyfuss. The movie centers around former black-ops agent Frank Mose, who reassembles his old team in a last ditch effort to survive when his idyllic life is threatened by a high-tech assassin. James Newton Howard has been hired to score the upcoming drama Water for Elephants. The movie marks Newton Howard’s second collaboration with director Francis Lawrence after the 2007 I Am Legend. Lawrence recently confirmed Newton Howard’s involvement on his Twitter account. In Water for Elephants, a veterinary student abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet. The movie’s cast is lead by Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz and Hal Holbrook. The Fox 2000 movie is expected to be released in 2011.
