Rolfe Kent is currently scoring the upcoming family comedy Mr. Popper’s Penguins. The movie is an adaptation of the beloved 1938 children’s book and stars Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Madeline Carroll and Angela Lansbury. The film centers on a New York business man who suddenly inherits six penguins and must find out that taking care of the animals is no easy matter as he quickly hits major hurtles, both at home and at work. Mr. Popper’s Penguins is directed by Mark Waters who has collaborated with Kent on most of his theatrical features (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Just Like Heaven, Mean Girls, Freaky Friday and The House of Yes), while his last movie The Spiderwick Chronicles featured a score by James Horner. 20th Century Fox has set a June 17, 2011 release date for the movie. ‘Fast Five’ Score Album Details

Varese Sarabande Records has announced the details of the score soundtrack release of the action sequel Fast Five. The album features around 75 minutes of Brian Tyler’s original score from the film and will be released on May 3, 2011. To pre-order the album, visit Amazon. John Swihart to Score ‘Nailed’

Film Music Reporter has learned that composer John Swihart has been hired to score the satirical comedy Nailed. David O. Russell (The Fighter, Three Kings) directed the film back in 2008, but he left the production before it was completed. According to various reports, the backers are now shopping the movie to distributors and a test screening was recently held in California, indicating that the project is finally nearing completion. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel, James Marsden, Catherine Keener, Kirstie Alley, Paul Reubens, James Brolin, Tracey Morgan and Jon Stewart. Nailed centers on a small-town waitress who is shot in the head by a nail gun and later goes to Washington to fight for better health care, where she meets a clueless congressman. ‘Who Are the Roma?’ (Music by Hans Zimmer)

Hans Zimmer has written the music for the public awareness short film Who Are the Roma?. The film was produced by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in honor of the 40th anniversary of International Roma Day and to celebrate the culture and achievements of the Roma people, commonly called “gypsies”. Zimmer’s music features Aleksey Igudesman on solo violin. Igudesman previously performed on Zimmer’s score for Sherlock Holmes and he is also co-scoring the upcoming documentary Jealous of the Birds with Zimmer. Klaus Badelt Scoring ‘Jock’

Klaus Badelt is scoring the upcoming 3D animated film Jock. The film based on Sir Percy Fitzpatrick’s classic book Jock on the Bushveld is directed by Duncan MacNeillie and marks South Africa’s first 3D animated feature film. While Badelt is writing the orchestral score for the film, the movie also includes original songs by Bryan Adams, Alan Menken and Johnny Clogg among other songwriters. Tim Rice (The Lion King, Aladdin) is the principal lyricist of the songs. Bryan Adams is also voicing the film’s central character of the fearless dog Jock who helps his master survive the wild challenges of the 1880s gold rush in the northeast of what would become South Africa. David Torn has recently finished writing the music for the upcoming comedy Jesus Henry Christ alongside co-composer Simon Taufique. The movie starring Michael Sheen and Toni Collette follows a genius boy conceived in a Petri dish and raised by a loving, left-wing feminist. His world is turned upside down when he discovers he has a half sister, leading a trail to his biological father. The film is written and directed by Dennis Lee who made his feature directing debut on 2008’s Fireflies in the Garden, which featured a score by Javier Navarrete. Rolfe Kent has recently finished scoring the upcoming HBO drama Cinema Verite. The movie looks at the revolutionary skein about the Santa Barbara-based Loud family, whose son became the first openly gay character on TV on the 1970s PBS series An American Family. The film stars Diane Lane, Tim Robbins, James Gandolfini, Lolita Davidovich and Thomas Dekker. Cinema Verite is written by David Seltzer (The Omen) and directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor, The Nanny Diaries, The Extra Man). Kent is the latest top composer working on an HBO project, following such artists as Carter Burwell (Mildred Pierce), Nathan Barr (True Blood), Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones) and Marcelo Zarvos (You Don’t Know Jack, the upcoming Too Big to Fail). Film Score Monthly has announced the premiere soundtrack release of the 1983 drama Testament. The film’s music is written by Academy Award-winning composer James Horner. Testament centers on woman who is struggling to take care of her family after a nuclear attack. Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
The comedy Arthur directed by Jason Winer and starring Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner and Greta Gerwig features music by Theodore Shapiro. A soundtrack with songs from the movie has been released earlier this week by WaterTower Music. No word on a release of Shapiro’s score. Also coming out this week is the family drama Soul Surfer starring AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt. The film’s score is by Marco Beltrami and has been released by Madison Gate Records as reported here. The album can be downloaded on iTunes.
