Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

the-croodsExpected to top the weekend box office is the animated feature The Croods directed by Chris Sanders & Kirk DeMicco and featuring the voice talent of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke and Cloris Leachman. Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future Forrest Gump) has composed the film’s score. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Shine Your Way performed by Yuna feat. Owl City earlier this week. olympus-has-fallenAlso opening wide is the action thriller Olympus Has Fallen directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Gerard Butler, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Ashley Judd, Melissa Leo, Dylan McDermott, Cole Hauser, Radha Mitchell and Rick Yune. The film’s score is composed by Trevor Morris (Immortals, The Tudors, The Borgias). Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring Morris’ score earlier this week. ‘To the Wonder’ Soundtrack Details

to-the-wonderLakeshore Records will release the official soundtrack album for Terrence Malick’s new drama To the Wonder. The album features the film’s original music composed by Hanan Townshend. Also included are two classical pieces used in the movie by Richard Wagner and J.S. Bach. The soundtrack will be released digitally on April 16, 2013 and physically on May 21. To the Wonder is written and directed by Malick (Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line) and stars Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem and Olga Kurylenko. The movie follows a Parisian single mother and a Midwestern tourist who fall madly in love in France and relocate to Oklahoma with Marina’s young daughter to start a life together. Elliot Goldenthal to Be Inducted Into New York Foundation for the Arts Hall of Fame

elliot-goldenthalThe New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) has announced that composer Elliot Goldenthal will be inducted into the NYFA Hall of Fame on Tuesday, April 23 at Espace (635 West 42nd Street). Goldenthal’s best known work for film includes his score for Julie Taymor’s Frida, for which he won his first Academy Award and was nominated for the original song Burn It Blue. He also received two more Oscar nominations for Interview With the Vampire and Michael Collins. His other work includes the original two-act opera Grendel, the three-act ballet of Othello and the large-scale symphonic piece Fire Water Paper: A Vietnam Oratorio. He is currently composing the original music for a production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to be directed by Taymor for Theatre for a New Audience this fall. The NYFA Hall of Fame was created to both honor the work of artists to whom NYFA provided critical support early in their careers and recognize philanthropists and patrons of the arts who have had an impact of the City’s cultural community. The other honorees to be inducted on April 23 include author and co-director of the Acquavella Gallery Michael Findlay, filmmaker Mira Nair and visual artist Fred Wilson. Henry Jackman Scoring Dreamworks Animation’s ‘Turbo’

turboHenry Jackman is scoring the upcoming Dreamworks Animation feature Turbo. The movie is directed by David Soren (Merry Madagascar) and follows an underdog snail who kicks into overdrive when he miraculously attains the power of super-speed. The film’s voice talent includes Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg and Samuel L. Jackson. Lisa Stewart (Monsters vs Aliens) is producing the project. Jackman has previously scored Dreamworks Animation’s features Puss in Boots and Monsters vs Aliens. ‘The Music That Makes You Scream’ Panel at Wondercon

wonderconBroadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) and White Bear PR have announced a film music panel at this year’s Wondercon. The Music That Makes You Scream features a panel discussion on the art of composing for the horror genre, which will be followed by a Q&A session. Participating composers include Tyler Bates (Dawn of the Dead, Rob Zombie’s Halloween), Anton Sanko (The Possession, the upcoming Nurse 3-D and Ghosts), Frederik Wiedmann (Hostel: Part III, Green Lantern: The Animated Series) and Dino Meneghin (Teen Wolf). BMI Director, Film/TV Relations Anne Cecere and White Bear PR Founder Chandler Poling will be moderating the event, which will take place at Anaheim Convention Center on Saturday, March 30, 2013 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Room 208. Varese Sarabande to Release Michael Giacchino’s ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Score

star-trek-into-darknessAccording to the film’s latest poster, Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack album for the sci-fi adventure sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. The movie’s music is composed by Michael Giacchino who has previously scored the 2009 original film, as well as every other feature directed by J.J. Abrams. The soundtrack is expected to be released around the film’s release in May. Check back on this site for the full album details. Star Trek Into Darkness stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Benedict Cumberbatch and Peter Weller. The movie follows the Enterprise crew as they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization that has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for. The film is written and directed by Joel Hopkins and stars Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan as a divorced couple who have to reunite when their pension is stolen by an unscrupulous businessman. Timothy Spall, Celia Imrie, Louise Bourgoin and Laurent Lafitte are co-starring. Tim Perell (Shortbus, The Rebound) and Nicola Usborne are producing for Process Media, Clement Miserez (Faces in the Crowd) is producing for Radar Films and Jean-Charles Levy (The Tall Man) is producing for Love Punch Limited. Steve Jablonsky to Score Fox’s ‘The List’ Pilot

stevejablonskySteve Jablonsky has signed on to score the pilot for the Fox drama The List. The show is created by Paul Zbyszewski (creator of Day Break, writer on Lost and Hawaii Five-0) and stars Michael Peña as a U.S. Marshal who leads the hunt for the person who stole “the list” – a file with the identities of every member of the Federal Witness Security Program – after people in the program start getting killed. Tamsin Egerton, Hilarie Burton and Gary Cole are also starring. Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) is directing the pilot episode and is executive producing the 20th Century Fox Television production with Zbyszewski. Fleischer has previously collaborated with Jablonsky on this year’s feature Gangster Squad starring Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Emma Stone and Josh Brolin. Read the rest of this entry »

Walt Disney Records to Release Soundtracks for ‘The Lone Ranger’ and ‘Monsters University’

lone-rangerWalt Disney Records will release the soundtrack albums for two of this summer’s most anticipated movies. First up is a soundtrack album for the western The Lone Ranger directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The film’s music is composed by Hans Zimmer. The soundtrack is set to be released on June 25, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The Lone Ranger stars Armie Hammer in the film’s title role of the masked crime fighter and Johnny Depp stars as his Native American sidekick from the popular 1950s TV series. ‘The Host’ Soundtrack Announced

the-hostInterscope Records will release a soundtrack album for the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel The Host. The album features songs by Imagine Dragons, Hudson Taylor, Skylar Grey, Ellie Goulding, Hudson Taylor, Duologue, Jamie N Commons, Die Mason Die, Active Child and X Ambassadors. Also included is one track from the film’s score composed by Antonio Pinto. The Host – Choose to Listen will be released digitally on March 26, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. As previously reported, a different soundtrack album featuring Pinto’s score will be released overseas by Metropolis Movie Music and is now available as an import on Amazon. The Host is directed by Andrew Niccol and stars Saoirse Ronan, Jake Abel, Max Irons, William Hurt, Diane Kruger, Chandler Canterbury and Frances Fisher.
