Last night, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), held its annual Film & TV Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Alexandre Desplat was honored with the Icon Award, which is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. The composer who received his first Academy Award earlier this year for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and whose other scoring credits include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Godzilla, The Girl with the Pearl Earring, Zero Dark Thirty and The Tree of Life was presented the award by the night’s hosts, BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations, Doreen Ringer-Ross and BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill. Several of Desplat’s regular collaborators congratulated him via a tribute video, including Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen, Tamara Drewe), Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) and Wes Anderson (Moonrise Kingdom, The Fantastic Mr. Fox). Tom Holkenborg (Junkie XL) Scoring ‘Kill Your Friends’

Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL has composed the original score for the upcoming British indie thriller Kill Your Friends. The film is directed by Owen Harris and stars Nicholas Hoult, James Corden, Craig Roberts, Rosanna Arquette, Tom Riley and Ed Skrein. The movie follows a 27-year-old A&R man who is slashing and burning his way through London’s music industry and goes to extremes in search of the next megahit. Jeff Russo and Ben Decter to Score CBS’ ‘Extant’ Season 2

Jeff Russo and Ben Decter are the new composers of the CBS series Extant. The show is created by Mickey Fisher and stars Halle Berry, Goran Visnjic, Pierce Gagnon, Camryn Manheim and Grace Gummer. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has also joined the cast of season 2. The show follows a female astronaut who discovers she has unwittingly put the human race on a path to destruction, and that she and a mysterious stranger may be the only hope for survival. ‘Ripper Street’ Soundtrack Announced

Silva Screen Records will release a soundtrack album for the BBC series Ripper Street. The album features selections from the show’s original music composed by Dominik Scherrer (Primeval, The Missing). The soundtrack will be released overseas on June 15 and is now available as an import on Amazon. Ripper Street is created by Richard Warlow (Mistress) and stars Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn, Adam Rothenberg, Myanna Buring and David Dawson.The series is set in and around Whitechapel in London’s East End in 1889 during the aftermath of the Jack the Ripper murders and centers on the notorious H Division, which is charged with keeping order in the chaotic East London streets. The film is written and directed by Natalie Portman who also stars in the film alongside Gilad Kahana and Amir Tessler. The movie is based on the bestselling novel of the same title by Amos Oz and tells the story of Oz’s youth at the end of the British Mandate for Palestine and the early years of the State of Israel. Gabriel Mann has composed the score for three network pilots that have recently been picked up to series, including the Fox drama Rosewood. The show is created by Todd Harthan (Psych, Skinwalkers) and stars Morris Chestnut, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Gabrielle Dennis, Anna Konkle and Maggie Elizabeth Jones. The series the most brilliant private pathologist in Miami, who uses his wildly sophisticated autopsy lab, to perform for-hire autopsies to uncover clues that the Miami PD can’t see. Richard Shephard (Dom Hemingway, The Matador) has directed the pilot episode. WaterTower Music to Release ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 5 Soundtrack

Nicolas Jaar Scoring Jacques Audiard’s ‘Dheepan’

Nicolas Jaar has composed the music for the upcoming drama Dheepan. The film is directed by Jacques Audiard and stars Jesuthasan Antonythasan, Kalieaswari Srinivasan, Claudine Vinasithamby, Vincent Rottiers and Marc Zinga. The movie follows a former soldier, a young woman and a little girl pose who as a family to escape the civil war in Sri Lanka and end up settling in a housing project outside Paris. Audiard also co-wrote the script with Thomas Bidegain (Saint Laurent) and Noe Debre. Pascal Caucheteux (Assault on Precint 13) is producing the project. Audiard’s last couple of features, including the Academy Award-nominated drama A Prophet, Rust and Bone and The Beat That My Heart Skipped were scored by Alexandre Desplat. ‘Vice’ Soundtrack Details

Metropolis Movie Music will release a soundtrack album for the sci-fi thriller Vice. The album features the film’s original music composed by the British electronic music group Hyrbid (Dead in Tombstones, Catacombs). The soundtrack will be released digitally on May 30, 2015 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips are embedded after the jump. Vice is directed by Brian A. Miller and stars Thomas Jane, Bruce Willis, Ambyr Childers, Johnathon Schaech, Bryan Greenberg, Charlotte Kirk and Tyler J. Olson. The movie is set in a city in which humans can enact their most perverse fantasies onto androids and follows an android who becomes self-aware and breaks out, only to become intent on shutting down the organization.
