Bear McCreary (10 Cloverfield Lane, The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) has recently recorded his score for the upcoming drama The Professor and the Madman. The film is directed by Farhad Safinia (Boss, screenwriter of Apocalypto) and stars Mel Gibson, Sean Penn, Natalie Dormer, Jeremy Irvine, Ioan Gruffudd, Steve Coogan, Laurence Fox and Jennifer Ehle. The movie is based on the book The Surgeon of Crowthorne by Simon Winchester and tells the story of professor James Murray, who began compiling the Oxford English Dictionary in 1857 and Dr. William Chester Minor, who submitted more than 10,000 entries while he was an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane. 20th Century Fox TV Records has released two songs featured in tonight’s episode (Love is the Message) of the FX original series Pose, including actors Billy Porter‘ and MJ Rodriguez‘ performance of the Charlie Smalls-composed song Home from the musical The Wiz. City Zen Records will release a soundtrack album for the new film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The album features the film’s original music composed by singer/songwriter Mia Todd Doi who collaborated with artists such as Saul Williams, Tunde Adebimpe, Dntel (of The Postal Service), the Swedish psych band Dungen, Mexican folk/experimental musician Luis Pérez Ixoneztli, and composer, arranger & viola player Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on her score. The soundtrack will be released digitally on July 13, 2018 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Premiering tonight is the HBO limited series Sharp Objects developed by Marti Noxon based on the novel of the same title by Gillian Flynn, directed by Jean-Marc Valle and starring Amy Adams, Patricia Clarkson, Chris Messina, Eliza Scanlen, Elizabeth Perkins, and Matt Craven. The show doesn’t feature an original score. Susan Jacobs who previously collaborated with Vallee on HBO’s Big Little Lies serves as the project’s music supervisor. The series follows a reporter who confronts the psychological demons from her past when she returns to her hometown to cover a violent murder. To learn more about the drama, which will air Sunday nights on HBO, visit the official show website.

Premiering on Friday, July 13, is the Netflix original movie How It Ends directed by David M. Rosenthal and starring Theo James, Forest Whitaker and Kat Graham. The film’s original music is composed by Atli Orvarsson (The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Vantage Point, Hansel and Gretel: Witch HuntersChicago FireBabylon A.D.). The line-up for several film music-related panels at Comic-Con 2018 has been announced. On Thursday, July 19, a number of film/TV composers will participate in the 10th annual Behind the Music panel. Mac Quayle (Mr. RobotAmerican Horror Story), Siddhartha Khosla (This Is UsRunaways),  Jared Faber (Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, Captain Underpants), Jim Dooley (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Sherri Chung (Riverdale, Blindspot) and Kris Bowers (Dear White People) will be participating in a discussion moderated by actors Jon Huertas (This Is Us) and Sara Rue (A Series of Unfortunate Events).  Read the rest of this entry »

Two new movies are opening nationwide this week:

Opening in most theaters is Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp directed by Peyton Reed and starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, Walton Goggins, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, Tip “T.I.” Harris, David Dastmalchian, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne and Michael Douglas. Madison Gate Records has released the original song It’s Party Time from the animated sequel Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. The track is written by David Foster & Michael Bublé and performed by Joe Jonas. The song is now available to download as a digital single on Amazon. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is directed by Genndy Tartakovsky and feature the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Keegan-Michael Key, Molly Shannon, Fran Drescher and Mel Brooks. Will Bates is composing the music for the upcoming Syfy original series Nightflyers. The show is developed by Jeff Buhler (Pet Sematary, Jacob’s Ladder) based on George R.R. Martin’s novella and the 1987 film of the same name and stars Eoin Macken, David Ajala, Sam Strike, Maya Eshet, Angus Sampson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Brian F. O’Byrne and Gretchen Mol. The drama is set in the year 2093 and follows a team of scientists aboard the Nightflyer, the most advanced ship ever built, as they embark on a journey to find other life forms. Capitol Records has released the original song Finally Free from the upcoming animated feature Smallfoot. The track is performed by Niall Horan who also co-wrote the song with Alexander Izquierdo, John Ryan, Julian Bunetta and Tobias Jesso Jr. Finally Free is now available to download as a digital single on Amazon.
