Last night, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) held its annual Film, TV & Visual Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Terence Blanchard was named BMI Icon in recognition of his significant contributions to the cinematic community. The composer who received his first Academy Award nomination earlier this year for his music for Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and whose other scoring credits include Malcolm X, Inside Man and Red Tails was presented the award by the evening’s hosts, BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations, Doreen Ringer-Ross and BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill.  Read the rest of this entry »

Milan Records has released a soundtrack album for Juan José Campanella’s comedy drama The Weasel’s Tale (El Cuento de las Comadrejas). The album features the film’s original music composed by Emilio Kauderer (Miss Bala, Conversations with God) who previously collaborated with the director on the Academy Award-winning drama The Secret in Their Eyes and the animated feature Underdogs. Also included are songs performed by Brenda Lee, The Platters, Perry Como, Chubby Checker, Mitchell Ayres and His Orchestra. The soundtrack is now available to download overseas. Mass Appeal Records & 36 Chambers will release a soundtrack EP for the Showtime docu-series Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men. The soundtrack features the new song On That Sht Again by Ghostface Killah and RZA, as well as three skits by Nat, Chao Hodari Coker, GZA & Masta Killa and more. The 7-track EP, which is produced by Mitchell Diggs & Mustafa Shaikh, will be released digitally this Friday, May 17. Check back on this page for the download link. Blake Neely & Sherri Chung are set to compose the music for the upcoming CW drama Batwoman. The show is developed by Caroline Dries & Greg Berlanti based on the DC Comics characters and stars Ruby Rose in the title role, alongside Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Nicole Kang, Rachel Skarsten, Dougray Scott and Elizabeth Anweis. Variety is reporting that Academy Award-nominated composer Nicholas Britell (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk, The Big Short, Vice) & Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Julieta Venegas are composing new songs for the upcoming musical drama Carmen. The film is directed by Benjamin Millepied and is set to star Jamie Dornan and Melissa Barrera. As previously reported, Britell is also composing the score for the movie, which is inspired by French composer Georges Bizet’s opera of the same title. Dimitri Rassam (The Little Prince, Escobar: Paradise Lost) and Mimi Valdès (Roxanne Roxanne) are producing the project. Read the rest of this entry »

Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy, 300, Watchmen, The Punisher, Dawn of the Dead) is reuniting with director David Leitch on the upcoming action movie Hobbs & Shaw. The film stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham who reprise their roles as sworn enemies Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw from the Fast & Furious franchise. They are joined by Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby and Helen Mirren. The movie follows the titular characters as they have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves. Spire Music has released a soundtrack album for the horror thriller The Convent (Heretiks). The album features the film’s original music composed by Paul E. Francis (Howl, Legends of the Hidden Temple). The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. The Convent is co-written and directed by Paul Hyett and stars Michael Ironside, Rosie Day, Hannah Arterton and Clare Higgins. Blake Neely has been hired to score the upcoming World War II drama Greyhound. The film is directed by Aaron Schneider (Get Low) and stars Tom Hanks, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Elisabeth Shue, Stephen Graham and Rob Morgan. The movie is based on C.S. Forester’s novel The Good Shepherd and tells the story of Capt. Ernest Krause who – in the early days of World War II – crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while being hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi submarines. SQÜRL (aka Jim Jarmusch & Carter Logan) have composed the music for the upcoming zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die. The film is written and directed by Jarmusch (Broken Flowers, Only Lovers Left Alive) and stars Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Iggy Pop, Selena Gomez and Tom Waits. The movie unfolds in the peaceful town of Centerville, which suddenly finds itself under attack by zombies. Johan Söderqvist (Let the Right One In, Kon-Tiki, In a Better World) is scoring the upcoming drama Lyrebird. The film marks the directorial debut of Dan Friedkin (The Mule, All the Money in the World) and stars Guy Pearce, Claes Bang, Vicky Krieps and Roland Møller. The movie tells the true story of Dutch folk hero Han van Meegeren, an art forger who victimized the Nazis with bang-on copies of masterpieces.
