Two new movies are opening in theaters nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the superhero movie Venom directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze and Reid Scott. The film’s original music is composed by Ludwig Goransson (Black Panther, Creed, Fruitvale Station, Community). Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening nationwide is the musical drama A Star Is Born directed by Bradley Cooper who also stars in the movie, alongside Lady Gaga, Andrew Dice Clay, Anthony Ramos, Bonnie Somerville, Dave Chappelle and Sam Elliott. Cooper & Gaga have also written several original songs to the film. Interscope Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie. Opening in limited release before expanding nationwide later this month is the drama The Hate U Give directed by George Tillman, Jr. and starring Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, KJ Apa, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, Issa Rae, Sabrina Carpenter, Anthony Mackie and Common. Dustin O’Halloran (Lion, Like Crazy, Transparent) has composed the film’s original score (click here for more information). Def Jam Recordings has released a separate soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by Arlissa, Bobby Sessions, Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, 2Pac & more (click here for the full album details).
Also opening in limited release is the documentary Studio 54 directed by Matt Tyrnauer about the famous New York City club and its owners Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell. The film’s original music is composed by Lorne Balfe (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, The Lego Batman Movie, The Crown, Home, Genius, Geostorm, 13 Hours). No word yet on a soundtrack release. Also opening in select theaters is the drama Shine co-written and directed by Anthony Nardolillo and starring Jorge Burgos, Gilbert Saldivar, Kimberli Flores, Jadi Collado, Alysia Reiner and David Zayas. The film’s original score is composed by Eduardo Reyes Napoles. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by artists such as Fania, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Willie Colin, Ray Barretto, Joe Bataan. Also opening in select cities is the crime drama Loving Pablo co-written and directed by Fernando León de Aranoa and starring Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Peter Sarsgaard. Federico Jusid (The Secret In Their Eyes, Kidnapped, Life Itself, Misconduct) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Also opening in limited release is the thriller Ride written and directed by Jeremy Ungar and starring Jessie T. Usher, Bella Thorne and Will Brill. The film’s original score is composed by Paul Haslinger (Underworld, The Three Musketeers, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Death Race). Music of the Sea has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by Archie Thompson, Psychedelic Soul Crew, Ages of the Earth & others. Also opening in select theaters is the drama A Crooked Somebody directed by Trevor White and starring Rich Sommer, Clifton Collins Jr., Joanne Froggatt and Amy Madigan. Andrew Hewitt (The Double, The Stanford Prison Experiment, Submarine, The Brass Teapot) has composed the film’s original music. The movie, which follows an attention-seeking psychic who is kidnapped and tries to use the situation to boost his popularity, is being released in theaters and on VOD by Vertical Entertainment.
Another limited release this week is the comedy drama Chasing the Blues co-written and directed by Scott Smith and starring Grant Rosenmeyer, Ronald L. Conner, Jon Lovitz, Steve Guttenberg, Chelsea Tavares and Anna Maria Horsford. Keegan DeWitt (Hearts Beat Loud, I’ll See You In My Dreams, Gemini) and Jeremy Bullock have composed the film’s original score. Opening in select theaters while also premiering on Netflix today is the drama Private Life written and directed by Tamara Jenkins and starring Paul Giamatti, Kathryn Hahn, Kayli Carter, Molly Shannon, John Carroll Lynch, Desmin Borges and Denis O’Hare. The movie doesn’t feature an original score and no soundtrack album has been released. The drama premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is now available to stream on Netflix.
