The only new movie opening in theaters nationwide this week is the action comedy Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard directed by Patrick Hughes and starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo, Caroline Goodall, Rebecca Front,  Gabriella Wrigh and Richard E. Grant. The the film’s original music is composed by Atli Örvarsson (Defending Jacob, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Vantage PointThe Edge of Seventeen, The Eagle, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga). Opening in around 500 theaters is the documentary The Sparks Brothers directed by Edgar Wright about brothers/bandmates Ron and Russell Mael and their overlooked rock band Sparks. The film’s doesn’t feature an original score. Gary Welch serves as the project’s music supervisor. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack EP featuring three songs by the band from their 2018 London performance, as well  alyric read by Neil Gaiman today. Opening in limited release is the documentary Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It directed by Mariem Pérez Riera about the life and 70+ year career of Rita Moreno. The film’s original music is composed by Kathryn Bostic (Clemency, Dear White People, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, Foster Boy, Holiday Rush). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows Moreno from her humble beginnings in Puerto Rico to her success on Broadway and in Hollywood where she broke down barriers, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Roadside Attractions. Opening in select U.S. theaters is the French coming-of-age drama Summer of 85 (Été 85) written and directed by Francois Ozon and starring Félix Lefebvre, Benjamin Voisin, Philippine Velge, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Melvil Poupaud and Isabelle Nanty. AIR’s JB Dunckel (The Summer of Sangaile, K.O., Capital in the Twenty-First CenturyCyprien) has composed the film’s original score. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as songs by The Cure and Rod Stewart last year when the movie opened overseas. Opening in select theaters and on VOD today before coming out on Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, June 22, is the psychological thriller Siberia co-written and directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Willem Dafoe, Dounia Sichov, Simon McBurney, Cristina Chiriac and Daniel Giménez Cacho. The film’s original music is composed by Joe Delia (Bad Lieutenant, Body Snatchers, King of New York, The Funeral, Tommaso). No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie, which follows the keeper of a snowbound bar as he is pursued by sinister phantasms. premiered and is being released by Lionsgate.

Opening in select theaters today before coming out on VOD next Friday, June 25 is the South African horror fantasy drama Gaia directed by Jaco Bouwer and starring Monique Rockman, Carel Nel, Alex van Dyk and Anthony Oseyemi. Pierre-Henri Wicomb (WaterfrontDie Spreeus) has composed the film’s original music. MovieScore Media has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Opening exclusively at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood today while also premiering on Disney+ is Pixar’s animated feature Luca directed by by Enrico Casarosa and starring Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer, Maya Rudolph, Emma Berman, Saverio Raimondo, Marco Barricelli, Jim Gaffigan and Sandy Martin. The film’s original music is composed by Dan Romer (Beasts of No Nation, Beasts of the Southern WildManiac, Wendy, The Good DoctorSuperman & Lois).
