Four new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Opening in most theaters is the action adventure Rampage directed by Brad Peyton and starring Dwayne Johnson, Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, Jake Lacy, Joe Manganiello, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, P.J. Byrne and Marley Shelton. The film’s original music is composed by Andrew Lockington (San Andreas, Journey to the Center of the Earth). Also opening wide is Blumhouse’s supernatural thriller Truth or Dare directed by Jeff Wadlow and starring Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, Violett Beane, Nolan Gerard Funk, Hayden Szeto and Sophia Taylor Ali. Matthew Margeson (Kingsman: The Secret Service & The Golden Circle, Eddie the Eagle, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) has composed the film’s original music. Another wide release this week is the animated feature Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero directed by Richard Lanni and featuring the voices of Logan Lerman, Helena Bonham Carter and Gérard Depardieu. The film’s original music is composed by Patrick Doyle (Thor, Cinderella, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Brave, Sense and Sensibility). Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally on April 27 and physically next month. Already playing in theaters since this past Wednesday is the thriller Beirut directed by Brad Anderson and starring Jon Hamm, Rosamund Pike, Dean Norris, Larry Pine and Shea Whigham. John Debney (The Jungle Book, The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2, Elf) has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows a diplomat who flees Lebanon in 1972 after a tragic incident at his home and, ten years later, is called back to war-torn Beirut by CIA operatives to negotiate for the life of a friend he left behind, is being released by Bleecker Street. Opening in limited release is the drama The Rider written and directed by Chloé Zhao and starring Brady Jandreau, Tim Jandreau, Lilly Jandreau, Leroy Pourier, Cat Clifford, Tanner Langdeau, James Calhoon and Lane Scott. The film’s original music is composed by Nathan Halpern (Rich Hill, Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present, One Percent More Humid, Sticky Notes). Also opening in limited release is the sports drama Borg vs. McEnroe directed by Janus Metz and starring Shia LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgård and Sverrir Gudnason. Jonas Struck (Prague, Superclasio) & Vladislav Delay have composed the film’s original music. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s was released last fall when the movie opened overseas. Jon Ekstrand and Carl-Johan Sevedag have also contributed music to the film. Also opening in select theaters and on VOD is the drama Submergence directed by Wim Wenders and starring James McAvoy, Alicia Vikander, Alexander Sidig, Celen Jones and Reda Kateb. The film’s original music is composed by Fernando Velazquez (The Impossible, Mama, The Orphanage, Hercules, A Monster Calls). Also opening in select cities and on VOD today is the horror fantasy thriller Wildling co-written and directed by Fritz Bohm and starring Bel Powley, Brad Dourif, Liv Tyler, Collin Kelly-Sordelet, James Le Gros, Troy Ruptash, Arlo Mertz and Aviva Winick. Paul Haslinger (Underworld, Halt and Catch Fire, Crank, Death Race, Fear the Walking Dead) has composed the film’s original music. Also opening in limited release is the drama An Ordinary Man written and directed by Brad Silberling and starring Ben Kingsley, Hera Hilmar and Peter Serafinowicz. Christophe Beck (Ant-Man, Frozen, The Hangover, The Muppets, Edge of Tomorrow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Chilly Gonzales have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie, which centers on an infamous war criminal and former general spending his life on the run from international authorities who is suddenly moved to a new hideout, where he develops a relationship with the maid that looks after him, is being released in the U.S. by Saban Films.
Another limited release this week is the comedy drama Krystal directed by William H. Macy and starring Rosario Dawson, Nick Robinson, Tip Harris, Jacob Latimore, Grant Gustin, William H. Macy, Felicity Huffman, William Fichtner, Rick Fox and Kathy Bates. The film’s original music is composed by Dan Romer (Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Good Doctor, Beasts of No Nation, Digging for Fire). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows a young man living a sheltered life develops a crush on a stripper, is being released by Paladin.
Also opening in select U.S. theaters and on VOD is the psychological thriller Marrowbone directed by Sergio G. Sánchez and starring George MacKay, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Mia Goth and Matthew Stagg. Fernando Velazquez has composed the film’s original music. Quartet Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last fall when the movie opened overseas. Also opening in select theaters is the thriller Aardvark written and directed by Brian Shoaf and starring Zachary Quinto, Jon Hamm, Jenny Slate, Sheila Vand and Marin Ireland. The film’s original music is composed by Heather McIntosh (Z for Zachariah, Compliance, 6 Balloons). No soundtrack album has been released. The movie, which revolves around a troubled man who has always lived in the shadow of his successful brother and begins a relationship with a young woman who might be his soul mate, is being released by Great Point Media.
Also opening in select cities and on VOD is the indie comedy 20 Weeks directed by Leena Pendharkar and starring Anna Margaret Hollyman and Amir Arison. Electronic music producer Kate Simko has composed the film’s original music. London Electronic Recordings has released a soundtrack album featuring Simko’s score.
