Opening nationwide this week is Pixar’s animated feature Coco directed by Lee Unkrich & Adrian Molina and featuring the voices of Gael García Bernal, Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt and Renée Victor. The film’s original score is composed by Michael Giacchino (Up, Inside Out, The Incredibles). Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez (Frozen), Germaine Franco (Dope) & Molina contributed original songs to the movie. Playing in front of Coco is Disney Animation’s short Olaf’s Frozen Adventure directed by Kevin Deters & Stevie Wermers-Skelton and featuring the voices of Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Idina Menzel and Jonathan Groff. Christophe Beck (Frozen, Ant-Man, The Muppets, The Peanuts Movie) and Jeff Morrow (Trolls Holiday) have composed the film’s original score and Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson wrote the original songs. Opening semi-wide in over 500 theaters is the drama The Man Who Invented Christma directed by Bharat Nalluri and starring Dan Stevens as Charles Dickens, Christopher Plummer as Scrooge, as well as Jonathan Pryce. The film’s original music is composed by Mychael Danna (Life of Pi, Moneyball, The Good Dinosaur, Capote, Little Miss Sunshine). Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to more markets over the next couple of weeks is the biographical drama Darkest Hour directed by Joe Wright and starring Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane and Ben Mendelsohn. Dario Marianelli (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, Anna Karenina, Kubo and the Two Strings) has composed the film’s original music. Deutsche Grammophon has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in select cities is the drama Call Me By Your Name directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar and Esther Garrel. Singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens wrote two original songs for the movie. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack album featuring both songs, as well as tracks by Ryuichi Sakamoto, John Adams, Bandolero, Giorgio Moroder & Joe Esposito and Frank Glazer. Also opening in limited release is the documentary Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars directed by Lili Fini Zanuck and traces the guitar virtuoso’s career through The Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos, and his solo years. The film’s original score is composed by Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, The Motorcycle Diaries, The Book of Life). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie premiered at this year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released in select theaters by Abramorama before premiering on Showtime in early 2018.
