Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the fantasy adventure The Dark Tower directed by Nikolaj Arcel and staring Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Taylor, Claudia Kim, Fran Kranz, Abbey Lee and Jackie Earle Haley. The film’s original music is composed by Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL) (Mad Max: Fury Road, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Black Mass). Also opening wide is the action thriller Kidnap directed by Luis Prieto and starring Halle Berry. Federico Jusid (The Secret in Their Eyes, Misconduct, Black Butterfly, The Hunter’s Prayer) has composed the film’s original music. A soundtrack album is in the works. The movie follows a mother who will stop at nothing to rescue her kidnapped son. The thriller is being released by Aviron Pictures. Visit the official movie website for more information.
Opening in limited release is the thriller Wind River written and directed by Taylor Sheridan and starring Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen and Jon Bernthal. The film’s original music is composed by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Proposition, Hell or High Water). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score. Also opening in select theaters is the documentary Step directed by Amanda Lipitz. The film’s original score is composed by Raphael Saadiq & Laura Karpman (Underground, Black Nativity) who also co-wrote the original song Jump with Taura Stinson. Columbia Records has released a soundtrack EP featuring the song, as well as tracks by Fifth Harmony, Candace Coles, Tate Kobang & more. Also opening in limited release is the sci-fi comedy Brave New Jersey directed by Jody Lambert and starring Tony Hale, Heather Burns, Anna Camp, Sam Jaeger, Raymond J. Barry, Dan Bakkedahl, Mel R,odriguez, Grace Kaufman, Matt Oberg and Erika Alexander. The film’s original music is composed by Dennis Lambert, Kelly Winrich and Matthew Logan Vasquez. Another limited release this week is the comedy Fun Mom Dinner directed by Alethea Jones and starring Katie Aselton, Toni Collette, Bridget Everett, Molly Shannon, Adam Scott, Rob Huebel, Adam Levine and Paul Rust. Julian Wass (Hit & Run, Room 104, The Overnight) has composed the film’s original score. Also opening in select cities is the thriller Armed Response directed by John Stockwell and starring Wesley Snipes, Anne Heche, Dave Annable and Seth Rollins. The film’s original music is composed by Elia Cmiral (Ronin, Battlefield Earth, Stigmata, Wrong Turn, Splinter). The movie follows a group of highly trained operatives as they find themselves trapped inside an isolated military compound after its AI is suddenly shut down. The thriller is being released in theaters and on VOD by Saban Films.
Also opening in select theaters while also premiering on Netflix is the documentary Icarus directed by Bryan Fogel. Adam Peters (Savages, Snowden, Sand CastlesNetflix) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie follows the director and amateur bike racer as he decides to dope himself to see if it would strengthen his endurance. The documentary premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is now available to stream on .
