Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the sci-fi adventure sequel Star Trek Beyond directed by Justin Lin and starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella. The film’s original music is composed by Michael Giacchino (Up, Jurassic World, The Incredibles, Inside Out, Lost) who previously scored J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. Also opening wide is the horror thriller Lights Out directed by David F. Sandberg and starring Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander DiPersia, with Billy Burke and Maria Bello. Benjamin Wallfisch (The Escapist, Summer in February, Desert Dancer) has composed the film’s original music. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. The third wide release this weekend is the animated feature Ice Age: Collision Course directed by Mike Thurmeier and featuring the voices of Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott, Simon Pegg, Josh Peck, Wanda Sykes, Jennifer Lopez and Adam DeVine. The film’s original music is composed by John Debney (The Jungle Book, The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2, Elf). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Opening in around 300 theaters is the comedy Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie directed by Mandie Fletcher and starring Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks and June Whitfield. Jake Monaco (Let’s Be Cops, Playing It Cool) has composed the film’s original score. Rhino Records has released a soundtrack album featuring a suite from the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie by Kylie Minogue, Jason Derulo, Paloma Faith and La Roux, Serge Gainsbourg, Nancy Sinatra, Leonard Cohen & more. Opening in New York before expanding to more cities over the next few weeks is the indie comedy Don’t Think Twice written and directed by Mike Birbiglia and starring Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Mike Birbiglia, Kate Micucci, Chris Gethard and Tami Sagher. The film’s original score is composed by Roger Neill (Beginners, King of the Hill, Mozart in the Jungle). No soundtrack album has been announced. Don’t Think Twice revolves around an improv group that loses its lease on its home theater at the same time that one of its cast members lands a TV comedy sketch show. Also opening in limited release is the drama The Childhood of a Leader directed by Brady Corbet and starring Bérénice Bejo, Robert Pattinson, Liam Cunningham, Stacy Martin, Yolande Moreau and Tom Sweet. Singer/songwriter Scott Walker has composed the film’s original music. 4AD will release a soundtrack album featuring Walker’s score on August 19. Also opening in select theaters is the comedy drama Quitters co-written and directed by Noah Pritzker and starring Ben Konigsberg, Greg Germann, Kara Hayward, Morgan Turner, Kieran Culkin and Saffron Burrows. The film’s original music is composed by David Shire (All the President’s Men, The Conversation, Zodiac, Short Circuit). No word yet on a soundtrack release. Quitters follows a precocious high schooler who decides to leave home in search of a better family life when his mother checks into rehab and tensions rise with his father. The dramedy is being released in theaters and on VOD by Momentum Pictures.
Also opening in select cities is the French-Belgian drama Summertime (La belle saison) directed by Catherine Corsini and starring Cécile De France, Izia Higelin, Noémie Lvovsky and Kévin Azaïs. Gregoire Hetzel (Incendies, A Christmas Tale, The Tree) has composed the film’s original music.
