Premiering tomorrow, May 30, is the History event mini-series Roots directed by Phillip Noyce, Thomas Carter, Mario Van Peebles and Bruce Beresford and starring Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anika Noni Rose, Chad L. Coleman, Erica Tazel, Derek Luke, Malachi Kirby and Regé-Jean. The 4-parter’s original music is composed by Alex Heffes (The Last King of Scotland, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, 11.22.63). Philip Miller (Catch a Fire) has co-scored the Noyce-directed first episode. Questlove (Top Five) serves as the executive music producer on the project. Also tomorrow in the U.S. is the BBC movie The Dresser directed by Richard Eyre and starring Anthony Hopkins, Ian McKellen, Emily Watson, Sarah Lancashire, Edward Fox, Vanessa Kirby, Tom Brooke, John Ashton, Ian Conningham and Annalisa Rossi. Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Quills, Billy Elliott, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin) has composed the film’s original music. Premiering tomorrow, May 30, in the U.S. is the third season of the British period crime drama Peaky Blinders written and created by Steven Knight and starring Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Sam Neill, Paddy Considine and Alexander Siddig. The music for Season 3 is composed by Dickon Hinchliffe (Out of the Furnace, Winter’s Bone, Last Chance Harvey) who previously scored Knight’s directorial effort Locke. Martin Phipps/Mearl has previously scored the show’s first season, while the second season was scored by Paul Hartnoll. The third season of Peaky Blinders will be available to stream in the U.S. on Netflix.
Premiering on Wednesday, June 1, is the Australian drama Cleverman based on an original concept by Ryan Griffen and starring Iain Glen, Frances O’Connor, Deborah Mailman, Hunter Page-Lochard, Rob Collins, Stef Dawson, Ryan Corr and Tasma Walton. Dave Whitehead has composed the 6-parter’s original music. Cleverman is set in the near future, where creatures known as Hairypeople live among humans as outcasts despite boasting superior physical powers. The drama airs in the U.S. on SundanceTV. Premiering on Friday, June 3, is the Cinemax original series Outcast created by Robert Kirkman and starring Patrick Fugit, Philip Glenister and Gabriel Bateman. The show’s original music is composed by Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Gone Girl, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Leopold Ross & Claudia Sarne (The Book of Eli, Triple 9). The drama based on Kirkman’s comic book series follows a man who has been plagued by demonic possession for his entire life.
