Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the animated sequel Hotel Transylvania 2 directed by Genndy Tartakovsky and featuring the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade, Keegan-Michael Key and Mel Brooks. The film’s original music is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh (The Lego Movie, 21/22 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Royal Tenenbaums) who previously scored 2012’s first part in the series. Also opening wide is the comedy The Intern written and directed by Nancy Meyers and starring Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, Rene Russo, Anders Holm, Andrew Rannells, Adam DeVine, Celia Weston, Nat Wolff, Linda Lavin and Zack Pearlman. Theodore Shapiro (The Devil Wears Prada, Tropic Thunder, St. Vincent, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) has composed the film’s original music. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as the songs from the film. Opening in around 1500 theaters is the horror movie The Green Inferno co-written and directed by Eli Roth and starring Lorenza Izzo, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Ariel Levy, Daryl Sabara and Aaron Burns. The film’s original music is composed by Manuel Riveiro who previously scored the Roth-produced feature Aftershock and also composed the music for the director’s last movie Knock Knock. No word yet on a soundtrack release. The Green Inferno follows group of college students who take their humanitarian protest from New York to the Amazon jungle only to be taken prisoner by the indigenous tribe they came to save. The film is being released by Blumhouse’s new distribution arm BH Tilt.
Opening in limited release is the drama 99 Homes directed by Ramin Bahrani and starring Andrew Garfield, Michael Shannon, Laura Dern, Noah Lomax, Tim Guinee, J.D. Evermore and Clancy Brown. Antony Partos (Animal Kingdom, The Rover) and Matteo Zingales (Secrets & Lies, The Hunter) have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. 99 Homes follows an unemployed construction worker who joins an unscrupulous realtor in the dirty business of foreclosing on the disenfranchised in order to save his family home. Also opening in New York before expanding to more markets within the next couple of weeks is the indie drama Mississippi Grind directed by Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden and starring Ben Mendelsohn, Ryan Reynolds, Sienna Miller, Analeigh Tipton, Robin Weigert and Alfre Woodard. The film’s original score is composed by Scott Bomar (Black Snake Moan). Lakeshore Records has released two soundtrack albums featuring a collection of blues tracks inspired by the movie by such artists as Big Bill Broonzy, Memphis Minnie, Joe Callicott, John Lee Hooker & more. Opening in around 125 theaters is the drama Stonewall directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Jeremy Irvine, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Joey King, Ron Perlman and Jonny Beauchamp. Rob Simonsen (Foxcatcher, The Age of Adaline, (500) Days of Summer, The Spectacular Now) has composed the film’s original music. Stonewall centers on a fictional young man caught up during the 1969 Stonewall riots. The drama is being released by Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate.
Also opening in select theaters is the German thriller Labyrinth of Lies directed by Giulio Ricciarelli and starring Alexander Fehling, André Szymanski, Friederike Becht and Gert Voss. The film’s original music is composed by Niki Reiser (Beyond Silence, Nowhere in Africa) and Sebastian Pille. Celloid has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score last year when the movie premiered in Germany. Another limited release this week is the comedy drama Ashby written and directed by Tony McNamara and starring Mickey Rourke, Nat Wolff, Emma Roberts and Sarah Silverman. Alec Puro (The Fosters, The Art of Getting By, Higher Ground) has composed the film’s original score. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by artists including The Daylights, Gary Trexler, Nathan Fox and Too Far Moon & more. Also opening in select cities is the thriller The Keeping Room directed by Daniel Barber and starring Brit Marling, Hailee Steinfeld, Muna Otaru and Sam Worthington. Martin Phipps (Brighton Rock, Woman in Gold, Harry Brown) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The Keeping Room is set in the Civil War and follows three Southern women who are forced to defend their home from the onslaught of a group of soldiers who have broken off from the fast approaching Union Army.The thriller premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released by Drafthouse Films. Also opening in limited release is the supernatural thriller Pay the Ghost directed by Uli Edel and stars Nicolas Cage, Sarah Wayne Callies, Veronica Ferres, Jack Fulton and Elizabeth Jeanne le Roux. The film’s original music is composed by Joseph LoDuca (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, The Evil Dead, Xena: Warrior Princess, The Librarians). Another limited release this weekend is the psychological thriller Forever directed by Tatia Pilieva and starring Deborah Ann Woll, Luke Grimes, Ioan Gruffudd, John Diehl, Rhys Coiro and Jill Larson. Mark Mothersbaugh (Hotel Transylvania, The Last Man on Earth, Rushmore, The Lego Movie) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Forever follows a young investigative reporter who suffers a sorrowful loss but finds an enigmatic commune where she starts to find her will to live and love again. Also opening in select theaters is the documentary Finders Keepers directed by Bryan Carberry & Clay Tweel and produced by Seth Gordon. The film’s original music is composed by Dan Romer (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Beasts of No Nation) and Osei Essed. Finders Keepers tells the story of recovering drug addict and amputee John Wood, who embarked on a legal battle to reclaim his leg, which was unwittingly purchased when it turned up in a grill he bought at a town auction.
