Four new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Already in theaters since Wednesday is the sci-fi action movie RoboCop directed by José Padilha and starring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jennifer Ehle, Jay Baruchel, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams and Samuel L. Jackson. Pedro Bromfman who previously scored Padilha’s Elite Squad movies has composed the film’s original score. Opening today is the fantasy romance Winter’s Tale directed by Akiva Goldsman and starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Russell Crowe, Eva Marie Saint,, Ripley Sobo and Mckayla Twiggs. The film’s music is composed by Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight, Inception) and Rupert Gregson-Williams (Bee Movie, Click). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score, as well as the song Miracle performed by KT Tunstall. Also opening wide today is the romantic drama Endless Love directed by Shana Feste and starring Alex Pettyfer, Gabriella Wilde, Bruce Greenwood, Rhys Wakefield, Dayo Okeniyi, Robert Patrick, Emma Rigby and Joely Richardson. Christophe Beck (Frozen, The Hangover) who previously scored Feste’s The Greatest has composed the film’s original music. Warner Bros. Records has released a soundtrack album featuring a suite from Beck’s score, as well as the songs from the film by artists including Tegan and Sara, NONONO, The Bird and The Bee featuring Matt Berninger, Echosmith, Franz Ferdinand and Tanline. The final wide release of the week is the romantic comedy About Last Night directed by Steve Pink and starring Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, Joy Bryant , Christopher McDonald and Paula Patton. The film’s original score is composed by Marcus Miller (The Ladies’ Man, Everybody Hates Chris, I Think I Love My Wife). Columbia Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by such artists as John Legend, James Brown, Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies, Bobby Caldwell, Pink Martini and Y’akoto earlier this week. Opening in limited release is the indie comedy Adult World directed by Scott Coffey and starring John Cusack, Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, Armando Riesco, Shannon Woodward and Chris Riggi. BC Smith (The Mod Squad, Smoke Signals) has composed the film’s original score and Dan Boeckner and Handsome Furs have written the movie’s original songs. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Adult World follows an awkward and anxious woman who lives with her parents in a seemingly bland upstate New York town. Desperate for income, she begrudgingly accepts a job at Adult World, the local sex shop. To learn more about the comedy, is also being released on VOD, visit the official movie website.
Also opening in select cities is the indie drama Jimmy P. directed by Arnaud Desplechin and starring Benicio Del Toro, Mathieu Amalric and Gina McKee. The film’s original music is composed by Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings, The Silence of the Lambs, The Departed) who previously scored the director’s 2000 drama Esther Khan. Howe Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last year, when the film opened in France. Another limited release this weekend is the romantic comedy Girl on a Bicycle directed by Jeremy Leven (Don Juan DeMarco) and starring Nora Tschirner, Vincenzo Amato, Paddy Considine, Louise Monot and Stéphane Debac. Craig Richey (Friends With Money, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, The September Issue) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score on February 25. Also opening in select cities is the comedy Date and Switch directed by Chris Nelson and starring Nicholas Braun, Hunter Cope, Dakota Johnson, Nick Offerman, Gary Cole, Megan Mullally, Sarah Hyland and Zach Cregger. The film’s original music is composed by Eric D. Johnson (Our Idiot Brother, Ceremony, Smashed). No word on a soundtrack release. Date and Switch follows two high school students who make a pact to help each other “score” before Senior Prom – but their mission suddenly takes an unexpected turn when one of them announces that he’s gay. The comedy is being released by Lionsgate and is also available on VOD.
Also opening in limited release is the Swedish thriller Easy Money: Hard to Kill directed by Babak Najafi and starring Joel Kinnaman, Matias Varela, Dragomir Mrsic, Fares Fares, Madeleine Martin, Dejan Cukic, Joel Spira and Lisa Henni. Jon Ekstrand who previously scored the first installment in the Easy Money series has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been released. Hard to Kill is the second movie based on the bestselling books by Jens Lapidus and is being released in the U.S. by Cinedigm. The third part in the series Easy Money: Life Deluxe is also scored by Ekstrand and will be released stateside later this year or in early 2015.
Another limited release this weekend is the horror thriller The Returned directed by Manuel Carballo and starring Kris Holden-Reid, Emily Hampshire, Shawn Doyle and Claudia Bassols. The film’s original music is composed by Jonathan Goldsmith (Casino Jack, Away From Her, Take This Waltz). No word on a soundtrack release. The Returned follows a young couple hiding a long-held secret in a post-zombie world, where the infected live normal lives but their retroviral drug is running out. The movie is being released in the U.S. by LevelFILM.
