Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the action thriller Safe House directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Liam Cunningham, Brendan Gleeson, Robert Patrick and Sam Shepard. The film’s score is written by Ramin Djawadi. Varese Sarabande Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide this week is the romantic drama The Vow directed by Michael Sucsy and starring Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Sam Neill, Scott Speedman, Wendy Crewson and Jessica Lange. Rachel Portman and Michael Brook have composed the film’s score, which has been released by Madison Gate Records earlier this week. For the full details, click here. Another wide release this week is the family adventure sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island directed by Brad Peyton and starring Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens, Kristin Davis and Luis Guzman. Andrew Lockington has written the movie’s score. Watertower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as two versions of What a Wonderful World performed by lead actor Dwayne Johnson. The final wide release of the week is the 3D version of George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and starring Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Jake Llyod, Ian McDiarmid, Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker. John Williams has written the music for the film, which was originally released in 1999. Sony Classical has re-issued the original soundtrack album (including a new cover art). Opening in limited release is a film that has already been featured in our weekly roundup when it received an Oscar-qualifying run in Los Angeles last November. The cop drama Rampart directed by Over Moverman and stars Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster, Steve Buscemi, Ice Cube, Sigourney Weaver, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon and Robin Wright has since received a soundtrack release from Lakeshore Records. The album includes four tracks from the film’s score by Dickon Hinchliffe, as well as songs by artists including Billy Huff, Control Machete, Gonzales & Zuninga and Molotov.
