La-La Land Records has announced a new soundtrack release for the 1969 western True Grit directed by Henry Hathaway and starring John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell. The album features the score from the Paramount Pictures production composed and conducted by Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven, To Kill a Mockingbird). Also included is the Academy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated main title song performed by Glen Campbell and co-written by Bernstein and Don Black. Bonus tracks include a demo version of the song, as well as three versions of Go Home Girl (one performed by John Hartford and two by Campbell). ‘Black Swan’ and ‘True Grit’ scores disqualified from Oscar consideration
According to Variety, the scores for Black Swan by composer Clint Mansell and True Grit by Carter Burwell have been disqualified from Oscar consideration by the Academy music branch. Both scores were deemed ineligible because they are “diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music”. The Black Swan score was heavily adapted by Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and much of the True Grit score was based on 19th century hymns.
Also disqualified are the scores for The Fighter composed by Michael Brook and The Kids Are All Right by Carter Burwell, because they are being considered “diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs”. Alexandre Desplat’s score for The King’s Speech, which has been discussed as being potentially disqualified for its use of classical music in some key scenes was ruled eligible for Oscar consideration by the music branch committee.
‘True Grit’ soundtrack release announced
Nonesuch Records has announced a soundtrack album for the upcoming western True Grit. The album features selections of the score by composer Carter Burwell, who regularly works with the film’s directors Joel and Ethan Coen. The album will be released on December 21. In the movie starring Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin and Matt Damon, a tough U.S. Marshal helps a stubborn young woman track down her father’s murderer. Burwell to score HBO mini-series
Carter Burwell has been hired to score the upcoming HBO mini-series Mildred Pierce. The five part series is directed by Todd Haynes (I’m Not There, Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine) and follows a divorced single mom who decides to open a restaurant business, which tears at the already-strained relationship with her her ambitious elder daughter. Mildred Pierce stars Kate Winslet, Evan Rachel Wood and Guy Pearce. The project marks Burwell’s first TV mini-series and second collaboration with HBO after the 1993 drama And The Band Played On.
